What Is This Pass?

Taipei Unlimited Pass Explained —And How It Differs from the Fun Pass

Many visitors confuse the Unlimited Pass with the Fun Pass. They have very different price points and inclusions.

The Taipei Unlimited Pass (official name: Taipei Metro Tourist Pass / 台北捷運一日票) is issued by Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC). It is a transport-only pass — no attraction entry included. It covers all Taipei MRT lines (Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Brown, Yellow) and Taipei city buses, with unlimited rides for the duration you purchase.

You receive a Yo-Yo Card (a special card, distinct from a regular EasyCard). At the end of your trip you can return it at an MRT service counter for a partial deposit refund.

The short version: if you plan to visit paid attractions like Taipei 101 Observatory or the National Palace Museum, the Fun Pass may be better value since it bundles admission. If you just want unlimited rides without any pre-planning, the Unlimited Pass is simpler and cheaper.

⚠️ Critical: Calendar Day, Not 24 Hours. The pass expires at midnight on the calendar day it covers — not 24 hours after first use. Buy a 1-day pass at 22:00 and you have only 2 hours before it expires. Always buy in the morning or early afternoon.
Break-Even Math

Is It Actually Worth It? —Real Calculations

MRT fares run NT$20–65 per trip (average around NT$30) · EasyCard gives ~20% off, bringing it to roughly NT$24/trip on average

📊 1-Day Pass NT$180 is worth it when...
EasyCard average/trip~NT$24

VerdictEasyCard wins for most people
📊 3-Day Pass NT$440 is worth it when...
EasyCard: 3 days × 5 tripsNT$360 (15 trips)
EasyCard: 3 days × 6 tripsNT$432 (18 trips)
Break-even point~6 trips/day average
VerdictWorth it only if you truly ride hard
🎯 Honest Reality Check

The average tourist takes around 4–5 MRT trips per day (morning out, midday switch, evening return, plus a meal stop). That is below the break-even point for the 1-day pass. In most cases, an EasyCard is cheaper and more flexible. The Unlimited Pass genuinely pays off when you are doing a serious multi-district blitz — Beitou → Tamsui → Zhongshan → Ximending → Xinyi → Elephant Mountain in one day, for example, easily hits 10+ trips. For bus riders, the math also shifts in the pass's favour since each bus journey saves NT$12–15 and those add up quickly.

Who Is It For?

4 Traveller Types —Should You Buy the Pass?

🗺️

✅ Great Fit — Multi-district Explorers

  • 🚇One day: Beitou → Zhongshan → Ximending → Xinyi → Tamsui = 8–10 trips easily
  • 💰EasyCard cost = NT$192–240 · Pass = NT$180 — you save immediately
  • 📅Short 1–2 day trips where you are on the move all day
  • 🧭Prefer not to think about fares — just tap and go
🚌

✅ Good Fit — Frequent Bus Riders

  • 🚌Buses reach areas the MRT doesn't — riverside paths, old neighbourhoods
  • 💳EasyCard bus = NT$12–15/trip · Unlimited Pass includes unlimited bus
  • ♾️4–5 bus trips/day cover a large chunk of the pass cost on their own
📍

❌ Poor Fit — Destination Visitors

  • 🗼A day at Taipei 101 + National Palace Museum = only 4–5 trips
  • 💸EasyCard = ~NT$96–120 · Pass = NT$180 — you pay more
  • 🚶If you're staying in one neighbourhood, daily transit cost is low
🚫

❌ Poor Fit — Airport or Gondola Trips

  • ✈️Flying in or out on the same day — Airport MRT not covered
  • 🚠Visiting Maokong Gondola — gondola not included, pay separately
  • 💳EasyCard handles both seamlessly — one card for everything

Klook — Pre-book online, collect at the airport
Recommended for planners

Book and pay in advance online, then collect the Yo-Yo Card at the Klook counter inside Taoyuan Airport. You land and immediately have your pass — no queuing at MRT service windows. Klook sometimes runs promotions that beat the counter price.

KKday is a popular activities platform for Taiwan that also sells the Taipei Unlimited Pass as an e-voucher, redeemable at designated collection points. Pricing and promotions occasionally differ from Klook, so it is worth a quick comparison before committing.

No advance booking required

Walk up to the staffed Service Center at major MRT stations — Taipei Main Station, Ximen, Taipei City Hall, Taipei 101/World Trade Center — pay the counter price in cash or by credit card, and get your Yo-Yo Card immediately. Best if you decide to buy on the morning you need it.

How to Use It

5 Steps from Collecting to ReturningYour Yo-Yo Card

1
Collect your Yo-Yo Card
The card you receive is a Yo-Yo Card — a special card distinct from a regular EasyCard. Your start date and expiry date are printed on the card. Check them before leaving the counter.
2
Tap at MRT fare gates to start
Tap the card at the gate reader exactly as you would an EasyCard. The gate opens, no fare is deducted. Tap out at your destination as normal — the system logs it as a passless journey.
3
Ride unlimited until midnight — not 24 hours
You can ride as many times as you like on any covered calendar day. The pass expires at midnight (00:00) on that day — not 24 hours after your first tap. This is the most common misunderstanding and the most common cause of regret.
4
Use it on city buses the same way
Tap the card on the reader when boarding a Taipei city bus. The system recognises the pass and no fare is charged. Some bus routes that run outside the Taipei city boundary may not be covered — check the route sign before boarding.
5
Return the card for your NT$100 deposit (optional)
After your pass expires, take the Yo-Yo Card to any staffed MRT Service Center to reclaim your NT$100 card deposit. The pass cost (NT$180–700) is not refunded — you used it. If you prefer, keep the card as a souvenir.
Watch Out For

5 Things People Get Wrong —Read Before You Buy

🕐
Calendar day ≠ 24 hours
The single most common mistake. The pass expires at midnight on the same calendar day — not 24 hours after your first tap. Buying at 22:00 = only 2 usable hours. Always buy in the morning.
✈️
Airport MRT is not covered
The purple Taoyuan Airport MRT line is a separate system not included in the pass. You need to buy an Airport MRT ticket separately (NT$160 to Taipei Main Station) or use an EasyCard.
🏪
Cannot be used at convenience stores or YouBike
Unlike an EasyCard, the Unlimited Pass is transport-only. It does not work at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, or YouBike docking stations. Keep some cash or an EasyCard for these.
🚠
Maokong Gondola not included
The Maokong Gondola requires a separate ticket or an EasyCard tap. If you are planning to visit Maokong, the EasyCard is more convenient — one card for MRT, buses, and the gondola.
🛒
Some suburban bus routes not covered
The pass covers Taipei city buses. Routes that extend significantly beyond Taipei city limits may not be fully covered. Check the route signage before boarding.
🚫
Lost card = lost money
If you lose the Yo-Yo Card while it is still active, both the remaining pass value and the NT$100 deposit are forfeited. The card is not registered to your name. Store it somewhere safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions Aboutthe Taipei Unlimited Pass

I'm buying a 1-day pass at 3 pm — does it expire at midnight or 24 hours later?
It expires at midnight on the same calendar day, not 24 hours after first use. Buy at 15:00 and you only have until midnight — 9 hours. This is the single most common misunderstanding about the pass. For best value, buy it first thing in the morning. If you are buying in the afternoon or evening, calculate whether your remaining trips for that day justify the NT$180 cost compared to just paying with an EasyCard.
Does the Unlimited Pass cover the Airport MRT from Taoyuan Airport?
No. The pass covers only the six Taipei Metro lines (BR, R, G, BL, O, Y) and Taipei city buses. It does not include the Taoyuan Airport MRT (the purple line connecting the airport to the city). You need to buy an Airport MRT ticket separately — NT$160 for the express to Taipei Main Station — or use an EasyCard, which works on both systems interchangeably.
Does the pass work on the Maokong Gondola?
No. The Maokong Gondola is not included in the Unlimited Pass. You need to purchase gondola tickets separately or tap with an EasyCard at the gondola fare gates. If you are planning a day that includes both MRT rides and the gondola, an EasyCard is the more convenient single-card solution.
Where can I return the Yo-Yo Card to get the deposit back?
Return the card at any staffed MRT Service Center — Taipei Main Station, Ximen, and Taipei City Hall all have them. You get the NT$100 card deposit refunded. The pass cost itself is not returned since you have already used the service. Alternatively, keep the card — it makes a nice souvenir and the deposit remains claimable.
Is there a 7-day unlimited pass?
No. The longest available option is the 5-day pass at NT$700. If you are staying in Taipei for more than 5 days, an EasyCard is typically the better choice. You pay only for what you actually use, you still get the ~20% MRT discount automatically, and the card never expires — so you can keep it for a future trip.
Can I use the Unlimited Pass in other Taiwanese cities like Kaohsiung or Taichung?
No. The Taipei Unlimited Pass is valid only on the six Taipei Metro lines and Taipei city buses. It does not cover the Kaohsiung MRT (KRTC), Taichung MRT (TMRT), or intercity buses. Note that an EasyCard, by contrast, works on the Kaohsiung MRT and many transit systems around Taiwan — making it the more versatile choice if you are travelling to multiple cities.
