Taipei's Bike Network

Over 100 km ofDedicated Riverside Paths

Taipei has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure — flat, paved, and separated from traffic along all major rivers.

Taipei's riverside cycling network follows five main rivers — Tamsui, Keelung, Xindian, Jingmei and Sanchong — with over 100 km of dedicated asphalt paths completely separated from motor traffic. The terrain is almost entirely flat, making it genuinely accessible for casual riders.

More than 1,500 YouBike 2.0 docking stations dot the entire network, so you can start and end your ride at any station without retracing your route.

Seasonal Caveats — Read Before You Go

  • May–September is hot and extremely humid (30–35°C). Midday riding is genuinely unpleasant — start before 08:00 or after 17:00 if visiting in summer.
  • The rainy season (May–October) brings frequent afternoon showers — check the forecast every morning before heading out.
  • Typhoons: if a typhoon warning is issued, cycling paths may be closed. Do not ride during or immediately after a typhoon.

Practical Tips

7 Things to KnowBefore You Ride in Taipei

⛑️
Always wear a helmet
Guided tours provide helmets. For YouBike DIY rides, buy one at Decathlon Taipei for approximately NT$300–500 or from any local bike shop. No exceptions.
🌅
Start at 07:00–09:00
Coolest air, best light for photography, and roads are emptier. In summer especially, this window matters enormously — midday temperatures above 30°C make cycling very uncomfortable.
Avoid riding in heavy rain
Wet paths become slippery and increase the risk of falls significantly. Check the forecast before every ride — afternoon showers are frequent May–October. An early start also reduces this risk.
👕
Dress appropriately
Avoid loose trousers that could catch in the chain. Wear closed-toe shoes — no flip-flops or heels. Apply sunscreen if riding during daylight hours.
📱
Use a waterproof phone mount
You will need Google Maps for navigation, and rain can arrive without warning. A waterproof handlebar phone mount costs very little and makes a big difference on a long route.
🔧
Check the bike before riding
For YouBike, always test both brakes, check tyre pressure and verify the saddle is locked before riding. If you find a problem, use the "report" function in the app and take a different bike.
📞
Save the guide's contact number
On any guided tour, ask for the guide's phone number at the start. If you get separated from the group or have a mechanical issue on the road, you will be glad you have it.
Cycling with Children

Is Cycling in TaipeiSafe for Families with Kids?

🚲✅🟢 Safe
Riverside Paths — Family Friendly
Traffic-Free Cycling · Good for Children Who Can Ride

Taipei's riverside cycling paths are fully separated from motor traffic, flat and well-maintained. They are genuinely safe environments for children who can already ride independently. Other cyclists and walkers use these paths throughout the day, adding to a sense of safety.

👶Minimum age: Most guided tours require children to be 10+ and ride independently
⛑️Helmet: Mandatory for all children — provided on guided tours
Recommended routes: Tamsui River Path and Riverside Park Loop
🚲⚠️🔴 Key Limitations
Important Limitations for Children
What Parents Need to Know

There are a few important limitations to be aware of before bringing children along.

No child seats on YouBike — carrying a child on a standard YouBike is unsafe and not permitted
Young children who cannot ride — guided tours generally do not accommodate non-riding children
⚠️YouBike Kids bikes are available at very few stations — not city-wide
⚠️Heat: Children tire faster — start early and take more frequent water breaks in summer
Frequently Asked Questions

Taipei Bike TourQuestions Answered

Do I need to know how to ride a bike to join a Taipei bike tour?
Yes — Taipei guided tours are for people who already know how to ride a bicycle. Tours do not include cycling lessons. Most routes are flat and paved, but you need to be able to ride, steer, and brake confidently before joining. If you are unsure, practise for an hour or two before booking.
Are e-bikes available on Taipei guided bike tours?
Some tour operators offer e-bike upgrades for an additional NT$300–500 per person. Check the specific listing on Klook before booking. Standard YouBike 2.0 stations do not offer electric bikes at this time.
Can older adults or seniors join a Taipei bike tour?
It depends on individual fitness. The riverside bike paths in Taipei are very flat and well-paved, making them genuinely accessible for active older adults. The City Highlights and Riverside Sunset tours are the gentlest options. That said, tours are not recommended for anyone with knee problems, heart conditions, or who has not exercised regularly for some time. Consult your doctor if unsure.
What happens if it rains during a Taipei bike tour?
Light drizzle may be manageable, but most operators will cancel or reschedule tours during heavy rain for safety reasons. Check the cancellation policy on Klook before booking — most tours offer a free date change or refund for weather cancellations. If you are visiting during the rainy season (May–October), booking a morning tour and keeping a backup date is strongly recommended.
Is cycling on YouBike at night safe in Taipei?
Generally yes, on well-lit riverside paths. Taipei's riverside cycling routes have adequate lighting and other cyclists use them throughout the night. Avoid major roads and dark back alleys. YouBike bikes have front lights and reflectors — bring an additional rear light for extra visibility. Night cycling is actually a great option in summer to avoid daytime heat.
Can you cycle from Taipei to Maokong or Yangmingshan?
Technically yes, but both require intermediate to advanced cycling ability. The climb to Yangmingshan is steep and involves traffic; the descent from Beitou to the city (~15 km) is more manageable for confident riders. Maokong's access road is similarly hilly. Neither is suitable for standard YouBike bikes — use a geared rental. A better option for Maokong is to take the Maokong Gondola up and explore on a rental bike at the top.
