How far is Taichung from Taipei and how long does it take?
Taichung is just 35 minutes from Taipei on the High Speed Rail (HSR), at a cost of NT$700 per journey (NT$1,400 return). Trains depart frequently so you do not need to book in advance unless travelling during a long public holiday. It is one of the most convenient day trips from Taipei.
How do I get from Taichung HSR Station into the city centre?
Taichung HSR Station (officially Taichung Gaoao Station) sits about 20 km outside the city. The easiest option is the iBus rapid bus, which costs NT$30 per ride or NT$70 for an unlimited day pass. The journey into the city centre takes about 40 minutes. A taxi or Uber costs NT$200–300 and is worth considering if you are in a group of three or more.
Is one day in Taichung enough?
Yes — if you start early you can comfortably cover five highlights: Rainbow Village, the National Taichung Theater, Calligraphy Greenway, Wufeng Lin Garden, and Fengjia Night Market. Taichung has good public transport and the main attractions are reasonably close together. If you want to add Sun Moon Lake or Lukang, extend to two days and one night.
What time does Fengjia Night Market open, and when is the best time to go?
Fengjia Night Market opens from around 15:00 and is busiest between 18:00 and 21:00. Arriving around 17:00 is ideal — most stalls are already open but the crowds have not yet peaked. Must-try foods include the sausage rice roll (大腸包小腸), giant fried chicken, original pearl milk tea from Chun Shui Tang, Fengjia-style takoyaki, and Sun Cake to take home.
What should I add if I extend to two days?
Two destinations pair perfectly with Taichung. Sun Moon Lake is about one hour by public bus and rewards an overnight stay or an early second-day visit. Alternatively, Lukang — Taiwan's oldest surviving heritage town — is just 30 minutes from downtown Taichung and makes an excellent half-day addition.
