Night cityscape from Mt Moiwa's summit · the iconic red TV Tower in Odori Park · a free beer museum in a 19th-century brick brewery · Hokkaido Shrine at cherry blossom time · the classic Otaru Canal day trip — every top Sapporo attraction reviewed and collected in one page.
Let's be honest — Sapporo is far more than Snow Festival and beer. Hokkaido's capital city has a night view ranked in Japan's Top 3, a wonderfully cute chocolate factory, a ramen district where miso ramen tastes like nowhere else, and Otaru — a romantic canal town just a quick train ride away. We've hand-picked the 10 most popular spots that travellers keep saying "you have to see with your own eyes," complete with locations, transport directions, prices, and tips that actually work.
Ranked by popularity and variety — from city-centre landmarks to the Otaru day trip you shouldn't miss. Each listing includes the location, how to get there, and tips drawn from real visitor reviews.
🗼 Observation Tower1
Almost every Instagram photo of Sapporo features this red tower somewhere in the frame. Standing 147.2 metres tall at the eastern end of Odori Park, the observation deck at 90 metres looks out over the park's 1.5 km green corridor and Sapporo's skyline in every direction. At sunset, golden light floods the tower and gardens — genuinely stunning. There are souvenir shops and a restaurant at the base, and admission is better value than many people expect.

🚢 Ropeway · Night View2
Have you ever seen Sapporo's cityscape from Mt Moiwa at night? If you haven't, this is the one sight you must tick off before leaving. At 531 metres, the panorama of Sapporo's glittering lights spread out below has been recognised as one of Japan's Top 3 night views, alongside Nagasaki and Kobe. Take the two-stage ascent — Ropeway then Moriscar mini-cable — to the summit observation deck. A restaurant and a viewing terrace sit at the top, making it a perfect choice for a romantic evening.

🍺 Beer Museum3
Honestly — this is the most "overdelivers for free" museum in all of Sapporo. The German-style red brick building dates to 1890, making it Japan's very first brewery. Today it tells the story of Sapporo beer and Hokkaido's brewing culture. Free entry for a self-guided tour, or choose a premium guided tour that includes tastings. Next door is a large Beer Garden serving Genghis Khan BBQ (lamb grilled at the table) — an iconic Hokkaido experience.

⛩️ Shinto Shrine4
The most important Shinto shrine on Hokkaido island, founded in 1869 and set within the peaceful forested grounds of Maruyama. The approach cuts through a canopy of towering trees — atmospheric and serene. From late April to early May, over 1,000 cherry trees across the shrine grounds and Maruyama Park burst into bloom simultaneously. Sapporo residents gather here for hanami (flower-viewing parties) — the city's most-loved sakura spot. Walk straight through to Maruyama Park in just a few minutes.

🕐 City Symbol5
Sapporo's architectural symbol since 1878 — a white American Colonial-style wooden building, the oldest of its kind in Hokkaido. Originally a military drill hall for the Hokkaido Agricultural College, the upper floor now houses a permanent exhibition on Sapporo's history and the building's own story. Situated in the central business district, it's a 5-minute walk from the station. Arrive on the hour or half-hour and you'll hear the clock's distinctive bell ring out across the street.

🏟 Olympic Legacy6
If you remember the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, this is where the legends were made. The jump hill is still used for world-level competitions. A lift takes you to the top of the jump ramp for around ¥1,000 — stand exactly where the athletes stand before they launch. The view over Sapporo from up there is remarkable, and there's an Olympic Museum on site too. Consistently described by visitors as "didn't expect much, completely blown away."

🌸 City Park7
Sapporo's most-loved public green space — a 63-hectare old-growth forest park right next to Hokkaido Shrine. It's a pleasure to visit in any season. During cherry blossom time (late April), 120 cherry trees in the park and over 1,000 combined with the shrine grounds bloom together, making this the city's top hanami destination. Summers bring baseball clubs and small wildlife; autumn (October) turns the park brilliant orange and gold. A short walk connects directly to the shrine.

🏮 Food & Nightlife District8
If you want a bowl of authentic miso ramen late at night, this is where you come. Susukino is one of Japan's three largest entertainment districts (alongside Kabukicho in Tokyo and Nakasu in Fukuoka), filled with neon signage, izakayas, karaoke bars, fresh seafood restaurants — and most importantly, Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley). Both Ganso Ramen Yokocho (birthplace of Sapporo miso ramen since 1951) and Shin Ramen Yokocho sit in narrow lanes that reward slow, curious exploration. A great spot for everyone, not just night-life seekers.

🍫 Chocolate Factory9
"White Love" chocolate — Shiroi Koibito is Hokkaido's most iconic souvenir, bought by almost every visitor. Shiroi Koibito Park is the chocolate factory opened to the public: watch the production process up close, stroll through the English Tudor-style gardens, visit the international chocolate museum, browse the cafe and the extensive chocolate shop, and even join a decoration workshop. A dream destination for families and anyone with a sweet tooth — the grounds are beautiful for photos too.

🚂 Day Trip · 30 min10
If you're in Sapporo and you skip Otaru — you'll regret it. The Otaru Canal is the classic day trip that Sapporo locals have been recommending for generations. Just 30 minutes on the JR Rapid train from Sapporo Station and you arrive in a historic Meiji–Taisho-era port town, where old brick warehouses have been converted into cafes and glassware shops. The canal reflects the buildings beautifully, especially at dusk. Stroll the waterfront, eat fresh Hokkaido sushi, and pick up handmade glass — a full, satisfying day out.
