HI Toronto Hostel — Downtown hostel · dorms + private rooms · for backpackers

On a budget but want to stay central and meet new people? HI Toronto Hostel is it. A hostel in the Church area with dorms and private rooms and a shared kitchen — ideal for backpackers and solo travellers who want to save without staying far out.

Our Full Review

HI Toronto Hostel sits on Church Street in the heart of downtown, near St. Lawrence Market and the Distillery District, with Queen and King stations on Line 1 close by. The location walks to restaurants, sights and transit, ideal for budget travellers who don't want to waste time getting into the city.

It's part of the Hostelling International network, known for cleanliness and safety standards. There are dorms (mixed and single-sex) plus private rooms for those who want more privacy. Honestly, don't expect luxury, but everything is clean and functional.

Downtown / Church Toronto

"The shared kitchen and in-house bar are where you'll find travel friends — for solos, that's value money can't buy."

Downtown / Church Toronto

The hostel's strength is its social atmosphere — a shared kitchen to cook and save money, common lounge areas and organised activities and tours that help guests meet new people. Great for solos wanting travel companions; many say they made friends here.

Basic facilities are all here — free Wi-Fi, lockers, a laundry room and an in-house bar that's the social hub. There's no pool or gym, but for this price and central location, it's more than you'd expect.

Downtown / Church Toronto

On value — a starting rate of around CAD 55 (฿1,485) a night for a dorm bed is among the cheapest downtown options. If you're on a budget and fine sharing a dorm, it's the best value on the list, and private rooms are still far cheaper than a regular hotel.

Downtown / Church Toronto

Worth knowing: dorms mean sharing a room with others, with some noise and less privacy. Light sleepers should bring earplugs and an eye mask, or book a private room. During the World Cup, city hostel beds fill very fast — book ahead.

In short, HI Toronto Hostel sells a budget price, a central location and a social atmosphere. If you're a backpacker or solo who wants to save and meet people, choose it — best value. But if you want privacy and full comfort, look at mid-range hotels in our list.
