Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake; Hikone Castle, one of just 12 original keeps and a National Treasure; the red Shirahige Shrine torii standing out in the water; and the UNESCO temples of Enryakuji atop Mt Hiei — Shiga wraps around the lake and is the easiest day trip in Kansai, with Otsu just 10 minutes from Kyoto by train.
Plenty of people visit Kyoto without realizing that just over the hills sits Shiga, the prefecture wrapped around Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake. The JR Biwako line gets you from Kyoto to Otsu in about 10 minutes — close enough for an easy half-day or day trip. Around the lake you will find Hikone Castle, one of only 12 original keeps and a designated National Treasure; Shirahige Shrine, whose red torii stands out in the water like a miniature Miyajima; the UNESCO temples of Enryakuji atop Mt Hiei; the merchant canal town of Omihachiman with its boat rides; and a long avenue of metasequoia trees that turns spectacular in autumn.

🎫 World HeritageAn old Omi merchant town where you can ride a boat along the Hachiman-bori canals past former storehouses, then take the hill ropeway for lake views — a wonderfully retro place to wander and photograph.

Shiga (滋賀) is a Kansai prefecture wrapped around Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, with Otsu as its capital right next to Kyoto. It is known for Hikone Castle (a National Treasure), the Shirahige Shrine torii standing in the lake, the UNESCO temples of Enryakuji on Mt Hiei, and Omi wagyu beef.
It is wonderfully easy to reach from Kyoto — about 10 minutes to Otsu and around 50 minutes to Hikone on the JR Biwako line. Most lakeshore sights are reachable by train along the lake, but for the western shore, like Shirahige Shrine and the metasequoia avenue, a rental car is more convenient.
This page gathers stays by area, standout food such as Omi beef, funazushi, Omi champon and biwa-masu trout, the main sights and a Shiga itinerary, with one-click hotel price comparisons across Agoda, Booking and Trip.com.
