Korakuen, one of Japan's three finest gardens, beside the black Crow Castle; the Kurashiki canal quarter with its white riverside storehouses intact; Bitchu Matsuyama Castle floating above a morning sea of clouds; and views of the Great Seto Bridge across the Inland Sea — sunny Okayama gathers gardens, castles and sea close together.
Honestly, Okayama is a city too many people speed past on the Shinkansen — a shame, because here is Korakuen, one of Japan's three great gardens, set beside a jet-black castle; the Kurashiki quarter where you stroll a canal past Edo-era white storehouses as if back in time; Bitchu Matsuyama Castle on its peak, floating above a winter sea of clouds; and famously sweet white peaches. All just 45 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen.

Okayama (岡山) is a prefecture in the Chugoku region on the Seto Inland Sea, with Okayama city as its capital and a Sanyo Shinkansen hub; it's known as a land of sunshine with little rain. Its highlights are Korakuen, one of Japan's three great gardens, the black Okayama Castle, and the well-preserved Kurashiki canal quarter.
Getting there is easy as a Shinkansen stop — about 45 minutes from Osaka and a little over three hours from Tokyo — with a 15-minute train on to Kurashiki; it's also the gateway across the Great Seto Bridge to Shikoku and, via Uno port, to art islands such as Naoshima (in Kagawa Prefecture).
