Japan's oldest capital, where over a thousand deer roam the streets, a giant bronze Buddha sits in a colossal wooden hall, the world's oldest wooden temple still stands, and Mt Yoshino's cherry blossoms are famous nationwide — World Heritage you can walk between in a day.
A lot of people treat Nara as a half-day 'feed the deer' stop from Kyoto — but it was actually Japan's first permanent capital (older than Kyoto), packed with genuine World Heritage: the ~15-metre bronze Buddha inside Todaiji's world-class wooden hall, Horyuji (the oldest wooden building on earth), Kasuga Taisha with its thousands of lanterns, and 1,200+ deer mingling freely with people. From Kyoto or Osaka it's only ~45 minutes on the Kintetsu line.

Nara (奈良) is a Kansai-region prefecture that was Japan's first permanent capital during the Nara period (710-784 AD), before the court moved to Kyoto. As a result it's full of the country's oldest temples, shrines and national treasures — many of them UNESCO World Heritage sites.
At its heart is Nara Park, where 1,200+ wild deer mingle with visitors, ringed by Todaiji and its bronze Great Buddha, Kasuga Taisha with its thousands of lanterns, and Kofukuji. On the outskirts stand Horyuji — believed to be the oldest wooden building in the world — and Mt Yoshino, famous for cherry blossoms.
It's about 45 minutes by Kintetsu train from Kyoto or Osaka, making for an easy day-trip — though staying over lets you see the deer park in the quiet of early morning and evening.
