Why visit Nara

Why you should make time for Nara

A lot of people treat Nara as a half-day 'feed the deer' stop from Kyoto — but it was actually Japan's first permanent capital (older than Kyoto), packed with genuine World Heritage: the ~15-metre bronze Buddha inside Todaiji's world-class wooden hall, Horyuji (the oldest wooden building on earth), Kasuga Taisha with its thousands of lanterns, and 1,200+ deer mingling freely with people. From Kyoto or Osaka it's only ~45 minutes on the Kintetsu line.

About — Nara travel 2026

Nara (奈良) is a Kansai-region prefecture that was Japan's first permanent capital during the Nara period (710-784 AD), before the court moved to Kyoto. As a result it's full of the country's oldest temples, shrines and national treasures — many of them UNESCO World Heritage sites.

At its heart is Nara Park, where 1,200+ wild deer mingle with visitors, ringed by Todaiji and its bronze Great Buddha, Kasuga Taisha with its thousands of lanterns, and Kofukuji. On the outskirts stand Horyuji — believed to be the oldest wooden building in the world — and Mt Yoshino, famous for cherry blossoms.

It's about 45 minutes by Kintetsu train from Kyoto or Osaka, making for an easy day-trip — though staying over lets you see the deer park in the quiet of early morning and evening. This page gathers stays, food, sights and plans for Nara, with one-click hotel price comparisons across Agoda, Booking and Trip.com. Information is current for 2026, but please re-check prices, opening hours and train schedules before you travel.

FAQ

FAQ · Nara travel

How many days do you need in Nara?
The core of Nara Park, Todaiji and Kasuga can be walked in a single day; add Horyuji or Yoshino and you'll want another half- to full day. Many people visit Nara as a day-trip from Kyoto/Osaka.
Can I feed the Nara deer?
Yes — vendors sell 'shika senbei' crackers for about ¥200 a pack. Feed only those, never human snacks, and watch out for deer nipping at bags, maps and tickets.
How do I get to Nara from Kyoto/Osaka?
Take the Kintetsu line from Kyoto or Osaka (Namba) to Kintetsu-Nara station in about 45 minutes, or ride JR. Either station is a short walk from Nara Park.
Are Horyuji and Yoshino far?
Horyuji is in Ikaruga, about 20-30 minutes by train/bus from central Nara. Mt Yoshino is farther — roughly 1-1.5 hours by Kintetsu — and best in cherry-blossom season.
When is Nara at its best?
Late March-April for cherry blossoms (especially Yoshino) and October-November for autumn colour, both with pleasant weather. The deer are adorable year-round.
