Miyagi (宮城) is the hub of the Tohoku region in northeast Honshu, with Sendai — Tohoku's largest city — as its capital. Its highlights are Matsushima Bay, one of Japan's three most beautiful views; the legacy of the warlord Date Masamune; and hot springs with autumn-leaf gorges.
It is very easy to reach: the Tohoku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Sendai in about ninety minutes, or you can fly into Sendai Airport. From Sendai you can reach Matsushima, Naruko or Akiu by train in a day, making it an ideal base for exploring Tohoku.
