Kochi Castle, one of twelve original castles with its keep still standing; Katsurahama beach with the statue of the hero Sakamoto Ryoma gazing out at the Pacific; the Shimanto, Japan's last clear river, with its railless submersible bridges; and katsuo tataki, fragrant seared bonito — Kochi, on Shikoku's Pacific side, gathers castle, sea, clear rivers and seafood all in one.
Honestly, Kochi on Shikoku's Pacific side has highlights of every kind — Kochi Castle is one of twelve original castles with its keep and gates still intact; Katsurahama beach has the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, the hero of Japan's reform, gazing out to sea; the Shimanto is called Japan's last clear river, crossed by railless submersible bridges; and the Niyodo River runs a clear turquoise blue. When you need a break, dig into katsuo tataki — bonito seared over a straw fire, fragrant and smoky, dipped with garlic and ponzu.
