Osaka Bay & Tempozan — A Giant Aquarium, a Ferris Wheel, and the Waterfront

Osaka's western waterfront is a full-on family district — Kaiyukan, one of the largest aquariums in the world, home to whale sharks; a giant Ferris wheel with sweeping bay views; the Santa Maria sailing ship; and a boat across to Universal Studios in just a few minutes.

Start Here

Osaka by the Sea —the District That Keeps Kids Smiling All Day

Picture standing in front of a glass tank as tall as a three-storey building, watching a whale shark longer than a city bus glide slowly past — that's what's waiting for you at Osaka Bay, the seaside district on the city's western edge. It's a completely different mood from Dotonbori or the downtown shopping streets. This is family territory through and through, anchored by Kaiyukan, one of the largest aquariums in the world, and ringed by a giant Ferris wheel, a waterfront mall, and a sailing ship that cruises the bay.

Even better, Universal Studios Japan sits right across the bay — a boat ride of just about 15 minutes. On this page we'll walk you through every spot in the area: what to ride, which boat to take, where to eat, how to get there with the least fuss, and how to plan a single day that makes the most of it, whether you're travelling with kids or as a couple.

🐋 Straight up, first thing: this district is worth half a day to a full day, not a quick photo stop — Kaiyukan alone takes about 2 hours to walk, and that's before the Ferris wheel, the boat, and the food zone. Budget the time, and if you also want to cross over to USJ, we'd suggest making that a separate day so you can actually enjoy both.

Eat & Drink

What to Eat Around the Bay — and the Real Osaka Classics

Eating in this district is easiest at the retro zone inside Harbor Village, but if you want to hunt down the legendary takoyaki and okonomiyaki shops, you'll need to head into the city centre — and we've rounded those up in the food guide.

🐙 Eating at the bay vs in the city: around Kaiyukan the focus is convenience — Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho inside the mall has takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu all together, perfect for a break between walking · but if you're serious about Osaka food, most of the standout shops are around Dotonbori-Namba, so take the train back into the city and save the big feast for dinner.
🐙
Takoyaki
Osaka's signature — batter balls with octopus, grilled in dimpled pans. Eat them piping hot right at the retro zone.
🍳
Okonomiyaki
Osaka-style savoury pancake, finished with sauce and bonito flakes. Order it alongside the takoyaki.
🍢
Kushikatsu
Deep-fried skewers dipped in sauce. Osaka's iron rule: no double-dipping. Try it at the food zone.

Staying Here

Sleep by the Bay or Downtown?

Honestly, most people don't stay overnight at Osaka Bay, since the nightlife, food, and shopping are all in the city — but if USJ is your main target, the hotels around the bay area do have their advantages.

🏨 How to pick your base: here for the city, food, and shopping → stay around Namba/Umeda and take the train to the bay for half a day (about 20–30 minutes) · focused on USJ + Kaiyukan over two days → a hotel in the bay area / Universal City is more convenient, so you can get to the park early · prices spike during USJ's peak periods (school holidays/long weekends), so booking ahead pays off.

Getting There — Stations

Reaching Osaka Bay Is Easier Than You Think

Every spot in the district uses the same station — Osakako on the Chuo subway line (the green line) — then it's about a 5-minute walk to Kaiyukan · to cross over to USJ you can choose between the boat and the train.

From Downtown
Namba / Honmachi → Osakako

From Honmachi you can ride the Chuo line straight to Osakako · from Namba, transfer once to Honmachi first, for a total of about 20–30 minutes. From the station, follow the Kaiyukan signs, ~5-min walk.

Tickets
An IC Card Is Easiest

Tap in and out with ICOCA/Suica — the subway fare is just a few hundred yen · if you're hitting several spots in one day, look at the Osaka Amazing Pass, which bundles public transport with entry to some attractions (check whether it covers the places you're going).

Crossing to USJ
Captain Line Boat ~15 min

From the pier on Kaiyukan's west side, take the Captain Line boat across the bay to Universal City Port in about 15 minutes — more fun, and no looping around by train · or if you'd rather not take the boat, ride JR to Universal City Station, right at the park gate.

The Bay's Highlights on One Map

Tips Before You Go

6 Small Tricks That Smooth Out the Day

🎟️
Buy Kaiyukan Tickets Ahead
Queues get long on holidays. Buy an e-ticket online up to about 30 days ahead and walk straight in without lining up to buy.
🌅
Go Early or Late Afternoon
Mid-morning to early afternoon on holidays is the most crowded. Try arriving at the 10 am opening, or from 3 pm onward — far easier to walk.
🌃
Save the Ferris Wheel for Dusk
Ride near sunset and you get both the daytime view and the night lights — the wheel's colour-changing lights are far prettier than by day.
🌧️
It Works on Rainy Days Too
Kaiyukan + Lego + the food zone are almost all indoors — a great backup plan when the weather turns.
⛴️
Check the Boat Schedule First
Both the Santa Maria and the Captain Line have limited departures per day, and may be cancelled on windy days. Check times on the official site first.
⏱️
Give Yourself Enough Time
Kaiyukan alone is about 2 hours, plus the Ferris wheel, boat, and food — set aside half a day to a full day, and don't cram USJ into the same one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions AboutOsaka Bay & Tempozan

How do I get to the Osaka Bay area and Kaiyukan?
Take the Chuo subway line (the green line) to Osakako Station, then it's about a 5-minute walk to Kaiyukan, the Ferris wheel, and Harbor Village. From central Osaka (Namba/Honmachi) the trip takes about 20–30 minutes. To reach Universal Studios Japan across the bay, take the Captain Line boat from Kaiyukan West Pier to Universal City Port, roughly 15 minutes.
What are Kaiyukan Aquarium's opening hours and admission price?
Kaiyukan is open roughly 10:00–20:00 (last entry around 19:00; hours shift with the season and holidays). Adult admission runs about ¥2,400–2,700 because it uses dynamic pricing that changes by date and demand, with cheaper rates for children by age band. Buy tickets online in advance to skip the queue, and always check the latest price and hours on the official site before you go.
How tall is the Tempozan Ferris wheel and how much does it cost?
The Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel stands 112.5 metres tall and was the largest in the world when it opened. One rotation takes about 15 minutes and a ride costs around ¥800 per person. Eight of its 60 gondolas have see-through glass floors, and at night the wheel lights up in changing colours. On a clear day you can see across Osaka Bay all the way to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
Where does the Santa Maria cruise around Osaka Bay depart from?
The Santa Maria is a replica of the ship Columbus sailed, built several times larger than the original. It departs from Kaiyukan West Wharf in the Tempozan Harbor Village area and loops around Osaka Bay past the bridges and port. The daytime cruise is about 45 minutes. Check the latest schedule and price on the official site, as some seasons add special sunset sailings.
What is there to do at Tempozan Harbor Village?
Beyond Kaiyukan and the Ferris wheel, Harbor Village has the Tempozan Marketplace mall, an indoor LEGOLAND Discovery Center built with over 3 million Lego bricks, and Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho, a retro food zone recreating 1965 Osaka with more than 20 takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu stalls. It's an easy half-day to full day all in one place, great for families.
Can I do Osaka Bay and Universal Studios on the same day?
You can, but both are large enough that doing each in full on one day is tiring. A better plan is to split it into halves — for example, Kaiyukan and the Ferris wheel in the morning, then the Captain Line boat across to wander Universal City, which has Universal Citywalk with restaurants and shops. If you want to ride the attractions inside USJ fully, set aside a separate full day; see our Japan theme parks guide for the details.
