Have you ever snorkelled the "Kerama Blue" — water so clear you can see a boat's shadow on the sand below? Listened to the birds at Sefa-Utaki, the UNESCO sacred forest? Or ridden a water-buffalo cart across the fields of Taketomi Island? Every one of these experiences tells you that Okinawa's main island is only the beginning.
Naha is a great place to start, but if you come all the way to Okinawa and never leave Kokusai-dori, you'll really regret it. The Kerama Islands are just 35 minutes from the port, with blue water so clear you get 30-metre visibility — that's Maldives-level, at Japanese prices. The north has the largest aquarium in the world, the south has a UNESCO sacred forest, and the diving is genuinely world-class. The most important thing to know before you go: Okinawa has almost no public transport outside the city of Naha — renting a car (you'll need an IDP) or booking a tour is the answer for trips on the main island, while the outer-island trips can be done by ferry.
Day tours from Naha bundle the transfer + guide + entry tickets into a single package — perfect for anyone who'd rather not drive or doesn't have an IDP yet. Prices run roughly ¥5,000-12,000 per person, depending on the destination.
Ranked by how well they work as a day trip — the ones genuinely worth doing in a day come first, with the trips we'd recommend overnighting for at the end, and an honest warning on every single one.
Okinawa's most action-packed northern trip. The highlight is Churaumi Aquarium — a giant 7,500-tonne tank that's home to whale sharks and manta rays, and the largest in the world when it opened in 2002. From the aquarium, drive 20 more minutes to the 2 km Kouri Bridge, which crosses over to a small island with Heart Rock beach and sky-blue water. See it in the late afternoon before driving back to Naha.
🌞 Good year-round · least rain Oct–DecHave you ever snorkelled the "Kerama Blue" — water so clear you can see a boat's shadow on the sand below? Underwater visibility of 30 metres, vivid coral right in front of your face, sea turtles gliding past just metres away — this is why divers fly in from all over the world just for this. The high-speed Marine Liner ferry from Tomari Port in Naha reaches Tokashiki Island in just 35 minutes, Zamami in 50-70 minutes. Book two months ahead in peak season.
🏊 Apr–Oct is best · but you can dive year-roundThe most famous snorkelling spot on Okinawa's main island. Cape Maeda has black lava cliffs that drop straight into the sea at the "Blue Cave" (青の洞窟), where sunlight passing through the seawater inside the cave turns it an astonishing glowing blue. It suits both independent snorkellers and those who book a guided dive tour with photos included. It's just 55 minutes to 1.5 hours from Naha.
🌊 Apr–Oct clear water · Jan–Mar strong windsA limestone cliff that the waves and wind have sculpted into the shape of an "elephant's trunk," rising over sky-blue water — it's the cover-photo spot for Okinawa from almost every angle. This trip pairs well with the Blue Cave or Ryukyu Mura in a single day. Entry is free, the grounds are spacious, and there are souvenir shops and fresh juice nearby. The sunset here is gorgeous.
🌅 Oct–Feb for golden sunset views · avoid public holidaysA southern trip that combines culture and nature in a single day. Sefa-Utaki is the most sacred forest of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage site — keep your voice down, listen to the sounds of nature, and feel the unique energy of the place. Then drive on to the Chinen Marine Center (just 15 minutes) and take a 15-minute boat ride to tiny, uninhabited Komaka Island, with its white sand, clear blue water and beautiful coral.
🌿 Oct–Mar cool weather, shady forest · avoid Apr–Sep, very hot and humidDrive along northern Okinawa's blue coastline, crossing Yagaji Island and then the 1,960-metre Kouri Bridge — the longest bridge among Okinawa's surrounding islands. The sea views on both sides as you drive across are an experience many describe as "like driving through the middle of the ocean." On Kouri Island you'll find the famous Heart Rock (Tinu Beach) photo spot.
🌞 Good year-round · least rain Oct–Dec · Tinu Beach is quietest in the morningA tiny island that has kept its traditional Ryukyu architecture fully intact — sand-paved streets, black-tiled rooftops, coral-stone walls, and water-buffalo carts driven by guides who play traditional Okinawan music as you go, like a poem in motion. The ferry from Ishigaki is just 15 minutes — an easy day trip from Ishigaki.
🏝️ Nov–May good weather · Jul–Sep hot + rain, but the sea is at its most beautifulHonestly — you can do Ishigaki as a day trip, but it's a shame. It's a 1-hour flight from Naha, yet if you fly out and back in a single day you'll only get about 5-6 hours on the island, while the island has the emerald-green Kabira Bay, manta ray dives at Manta Scramble, and Taketomi and Iriomote islands all waiting for you. We'd recommend planning Ishigaki as a separate 2-3 night trip.
🤿 Oct–Jun manta season · Jul–Sep hot + typhoonsAn island that's 90% protected subtropical rainforest — home to the Iriomote Wildcat (a rare cat with fewer than 100 left in the world). Cruise the Urauchi River through mangrove forest, hike to the Mariyudo and Kampire waterfalls, and dive at Barasu Island with its incredibly intact coral. But from Naha it's a flight then a ferry, about 3 hours of travel in total — a day trip really isn't worth it; you should stay here at least 2 nights.
🌴 Nov–Apr good weather, waterfalls flowing · avoid Jul–Sep (typhoons + rain)Two small northern islands that foreign tourists barely know. Iheya (伊平屋島) has a population of around 1,600 — the height of peace and quiet, with crowd-free white-sand beaches and big fish swimming along the shore. Izena (伊是名島) is the birthplace of a Ryukyu king of the Sho dynasty. Both islands are reached from Motobu Port (in the north), not directly from Naha, and make for a very long day trip.
🌺 Apr–Jun little rain, good weather · very few tourists at this timeChoose a ready-made itinerary, browse Okinawa's restaurants, or find a well-located hotel so you can head out on day trips with ease.
