10 Must-Visit Okinawa Attractions

The heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom for over 500 years, Shuri Castle's architecture uniquely blends Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan styles. The vivid red rooftops crown the Shuri hilltop, with the cityscape of Naha spread below. Visiting during the restoration has its own charm — you can watch traditional woodworkers and craftspeople at work on the real thing.

The world's second-largest aquarium. The centrepiece "Kuroshio Sea" tank — 7,500 tonnes of seawater — holds whale sharks and manta rays that glide freely right in front of you. This is probably where you'll stand the longest, without moving, in all of Okinawa. Set inside Ocean Expo Park, with gardens, a beach, and dolphin shows included in your ticket.

Naha's 1.6-kilometre main street — packed with Okinawan souvenir shops, local restaurants, cafés, and 24-hour convenience stores. The natural starting point for first-time visitors: walkable from late afternoon well into the night. The side streets branching off both sides lead to fresh-food markets and youth fashion shops worth exploring.

Chatan town in the middle of the island was built on reclaimed land from a former US military base and has been transformed into a lively American-style shopping and entertainment district. It has a Ferris wheel, restaurants, cafés, a multiplex cinema, and Mihama Beach right next door — making it the most popular sunset spot on the main island.

A limestone cliff sculpted by waves into the shape of an elephant's trunk — Okinawa's most iconic photo stop, and one nobody skips. The deep-blue Coral Sea set against white rock walls is stunning at any hour, but at sunset the golden light reflected on the water is the kind of view that sneaks up on you. The coastal walking trail around the cape has recently been renovated.

An underwater cave where sunlight refracts through the water's surface into an impossibly vivid electric blue — like stepping into another dimension. Have you ever been inside a cave where the water itself seems to glow? This is it. You can snorkel in from the steps on the cape, or book a guided snorkel or dive tour from the shops above. Shallow enough for beginners.

The holiest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom, awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Ancient limestone forest where massive boulders lean against each other to form a sacred passage called "Sangui," with Kudaka Island visible across the water in the distance. Quiet, mysterious, and utterly unlike anywhere else we have ever been.

Naha's public sandy beach — you can swim in Okinawa's ocean without driving anywhere. Above the beach, Naminoue Guu Shrine sits dramatically on a white limestone cliff. A great option for travellers short on time or staying in Naha who want a taste of Okinawa's sea before their flight home. Full facilities on site.

The royal mausoleum of the Ryukyu royal family, built in 1501, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located just minutes from Shuri Castle by foot, so easy to combine in the same visit. The intricately carved limestone architecture reflects Ryukyuan beliefs about the afterlife. Far fewer visitors than the castle — the quiet here is extraordinary.

If Okinawa is the Maldives of Japan, Kerama is the clearest part of it. Underwater visibility of 30+ metres, pristine coral gardens, sea turtles drifting past your mask, and manta rays in winter. A high-speed ferry from Naha takes just 35–50 minutes. Perfect as a day trip or an overnight stay for a proper look at the stars.
