10 Must-Visit Okinawa Attractions

Here's the honest truth — Okinawa feels nothing like mainland Japan. Maldives-clear water · healthy coral reefs · 600-year-old Ryukyu castles · food that is entirely its own thing — our review of 10 essential spots, with GPS locations and tips from someone who has actually been there.

Why Okinawa

Okinawa Is the Japan You Never Saw Coming

Have you ever ducked into a Blue Cave and watched electric-blue light pulse through the water around you? Or stood on an elephant-trunk rock formation so surreal you took the same photo ten times? Okinawa is Japan's southernmost island chain, where Ryukyu culture blended with Chinese, Japanese, and American influences into something that belongs to no other place on earth. The food is different. The dialect is different. The architecture is different. And the sea is so clear it's almost unfair. Here are the 10 spots you need to hit — with tips your tour guide probably won't tell you.

🌊
World-Class Water Clarity
30+ metres of underwater visibility, pristine coral, whale sharks, mantas, and sea turtles.
🏯
The Ryukyu Kingdom
600 years of distinct culture — UNESCO castles, sacred sites, and royal mausoleums.
🌺
Genuinely Tropical
Palm trees, hibiscus flowers, warm weather year-round — 180 degrees from mainland Japan.
🍜
Its Own Food Culture
Soki Soba braised pork · Taco Rice · Goya Champuru · ultra-fresh seafood every day.

Shuri Castle red gate Naha Okinawa Ryukyu Kingdom UNESCO 🏯 UNESCO1
Shuri Castle
首里城 · Shuri Castle · Naha
🔨

Restoration Update 2026: The castle burned in October 2019 · The exterior Seiden hall was completed in July 2025 — the red roof is now visible. The interior is not yet open — full reopening is scheduled for late 2026. The gates, courtyards, and a restoration exhibition centre are open as normal. Always verify the latest status on the official website before you visit.

The heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom for over 500 years, Shuri Castle's architecture uniquely blends Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan styles. The vivid red rooftops crown the Shuri hilltop, with the cityscape of Naha spread below. Visiting during the restoration has its own charm — you can watch traditional woodworkers and craftspeople at work on the real thing.

📍Location: Shuri, Naha — Yui Rail Shuri Station, 15-min walk
Hours: 8:00–19:30 (Oct–Jun closes 18:30) · Approx. ¥400 entry (restoration area)
🚝Getting there: Yui Rail monorail to Shuri Station, then walk 15 minutes. Or Okinawa-Minatogawa Station + taxi.
💡Tip: Go before 9 am — morning light makes the red walls glow and the crowds haven't arrived. Always check the official site for the latest restoration status.

📍Location: Motobu, northern main island — about 2 hours from Naha
Hours: 8:30–18:30 (closed first Wed of Dec and the following day) · Adult approx. ¥2,180

Kokusai-dori shopping street Naha Okinawa food and souvenirs 🛍️ Shopping3
Kokusai-dori
国際通り · Kokusai-dori · Naha

Naha's 1.6-kilometre main street — packed with Okinawan souvenir shops, local restaurants, cafés, and 24-hour convenience stores. The natural starting point for first-time visitors: walkable from late afternoon well into the night. The side streets branching off both sides lead to fresh-food markets and youth fashion shops worth exploring.

📍Location: Naha City Centre — Yui Rail Makishi or Kencho-mae Station
Hours: Shops generally 10:00–22:00; the street itself is accessible 24 hours
🚝Getting there: Yui Rail to Makishi Station, 2-minute walk — the easiest spot to reach on Okinawa
💡Tip: Best souvenirs: Chinsuko shortbread cookies · Awamori Ryukyu spirits · Bingata dyed fabric. Shop at Makishi Public Market for better prices than the airport.

American Village Chatan Okinawa beach and American-style shopping district 🎡 Lifestyle4
American Village
アメリカンビレッジ · American Village · Chatan

Chatan town in the middle of the island was built on reclaimed land from a former US military base and has been transformed into a lively American-style shopping and entertainment district. It has a Ferris wheel, restaurants, cafés, a multiplex cinema, and Mihama Beach right next door — making it the most popular sunset spot on the main island.

📍Location: Mihama, Chatan-cho — central island, 30 minutes by car from Naha
Hours: Most shops 11:00–22:00, some open until midnight daily
🚗Getting there: Rental car, or Ryukyubus Kotsu bus route 23 from Naha (45–60 min)

Cape Manzamo elephant trunk rock Okinawa crystal blue sea panorama 🌅 Panoramic View5
Cape Manzamo
万座毛 · Cape Manzamo · Onna-son

A limestone cliff sculpted by waves into the shape of an elephant's trunk — Okinawa's most iconic photo stop, and one nobody skips. The deep-blue Coral Sea set against white rock walls is stunning at any hour, but at sunset the golden light reflected on the water is the kind of view that sneaks up on you. The coastal walking trail around the cape has recently been renovated.

📍Location: Onna-son, central-north island — about 1 hour from Naha
Hours: 8:00–19:30 (winter closes 17:30) · Adult approx. ¥100 (renovated trail)
🚗Getting there: Rental car is the best option; easily combined with Churaumi Aquarium on the same day (Naha → Manzamo → Churaumi route)
💡Tip: Come at 8–9 am before tour coaches arrive, or at sunset for the golden light. Parking is limited — arrive 30 minutes early for sunset.

Cape Maeda Blue Cave Okinawa snorkelling and diving in electric blue water 🤿 Snorkelling6
Cape Maeda / Blue Cave
真栄田岬 / 青の洞窟 · Cape Maeda / Blue Cave · Onna-son

An underwater cave where sunlight refracts through the water's surface into an impossibly vivid electric blue — like stepping into another dimension. Have you ever been inside a cave where the water itself seems to glow? This is it. You can snorkel in from the steps on the cape, or book a guided snorkel or dive tour from the shops above. Shallow enough for beginners.

📍Location: Onna-son — approx. 55 minutes by car from Naha via Expressway
Hours: Entry steps open 8:00–17:00 · Snorkel tours approx. ¥4,500–6,500/person incl. equipment
🚗Getting there: Rental car from Naha (55 min, Expressway). Paid parking ¥100/hr. Showers and lockers available at the cape.

Sefa-Utaki UNESCO World Heritage sacred Ryukyu forest Okinawa 🌿 UNESCO7
Sefa-Utaki
斎場御嶽 · Sefa-Utaki · Nanjo

The holiest sacred site of the Ryukyu Kingdom, awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Ancient limestone forest where massive boulders lean against each other to form a sacred passage called "Sangui," with Kudaka Island visible across the water in the distance. Quiet, mysterious, and utterly unlike anywhere else we have ever been.

📍Location: Nanjo, southern main island — approx. 40 minutes from Naha
Hours: Mar–Oct 9:00–18:00 · Nov–Feb 9:00–17:30 · Adult approx. ¥300
🚗Getting there: Rental car, or Naha Bus route 38 or 338 to the Sefa-Utaki Iriguchi stop, then 10-min walk

Naminoue Beach Naha Okinawa public city beach 🏖️ City Beach8
Naminoue Beach
波の上ビーチ · Naminoue Beach · Naha

Naha's public sandy beach — you can swim in Okinawa's ocean without driving anywhere. Above the beach, Naminoue Guu Shrine sits dramatically on a white limestone cliff. A great option for travellers short on time or staying in Naha who want a taste of Okinawa's sea before their flight home. Full facilities on site.

📍Location: Wakasa, Naha — 15 minutes by taxi from Kokusai-dori
Hours: Swimming season Apr–Oct (official sea season) · Free entry
🚌Getting there: Ryukyubus route 101 from Naha Bus Terminal to Naminoue stop, approx. 10 minutes
💡Tip: The water is clear and pleasant, but it does not compare to Kerama or Manzamo. If you have just one day and are based in Naha, this is still a solid choice — zero travel time wasted.

Tamaudun Mausoleum royal Ryukyu UNESCO World Heritage Naha Okinawa 🏛️ World Heritage9
Tamaudun Mausoleum
玉陵 · Tamaudun Mausoleum · Shuri, Naha

The royal mausoleum of the Ryukyu royal family, built in 1501, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located just minutes from Shuri Castle by foot, so easy to combine in the same visit. The intricately carved limestone architecture reflects Ryukyuan beliefs about the afterlife. Far fewer visitors than the castle — the quiet here is extraordinary.

📍Location: Shuri, Naha — 5-min walk from Shuri Castle
Hours: 9:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30) · Adult approx. ¥310
🚝Getting there: Yui Rail to Shuri Station, 10-min walk. Best visited on the same day as Shuri Castle.
💡Tip: A combined Shuri Castle + Tamaudun ticket offers a discount. Visit Tamaudun first — it is quieter — then walk to the castle.

A high-speed ferry from Naha takes just 35–50 minutes. Perfect as a day trip or an overnight stay for a proper look at the stars.

Okinawa Travel Tips

6 Things to Know Before You Fly to Okinawa

🚗
A Rental Car is Essential
Yui Rail only covers Naha. Buses outside the city are infrequent and slow. To reach Churaumi / Manzamo / Sefa-Utaki you need a car.
🌊
Check Sea Conditions Daily
Blue Cave and water activities close when the sea is rough. Check windfinder.com or a local app. Always have a Plan B for your snorkelling day.
🏯
Shuri Castle Is Still Under Restoration
The exterior is done, but the interior is not yet open in 2026. Do not expect to walk inside. Check the official website for the latest update before you go.
📶
Get an eSIM Before You Fly
Maps and driving directions are critical in Okinawa. Google Maps on your phone is non-negotiable. Don't forget to keep your phone charged in the car.
☀️
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Okinawa actively promotes coral-safe sunscreen. You can buy it at convenience stores on the island, or bring your own from home.
🍜
Eat Okinawa Soba at Least Once
Braised pork noodle soup in a Okinawan-style broth — nothing like regular ramen. The best bowls are in the side streets off Kokusai-dori, not on the main strip.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Okinawa Travel

How many days do I need for Okinawa?
We recommend 4–5 days to cover the main island comfortably. Day 1: Naha (Shuri Castle + Kokusai-dori) · Day 2: North (Churaumi Aquarium + Cape Manzamo) · Day 3: South (Sefa-Utaki + Cape Maeda / Blue Cave) · Day 4: Kerama Islands day trip for diving · Day 5: American Village + shopping. Even 3 days gets you through the highlights if you plan well.
Can I get around Okinawa without renting a car?
In Naha, the Yui Rail (monorail) and walking are perfectly fine. But sights outside Naha — Churaumi Aquarium, Cape Manzamo, Sefa-Utaki — have very limited public transport, and buses take 2–3 times as long. A rental car from Naha Airport is strongly recommended (approx. ¥5,000–8,000/day). Without one, you will need tours or Express Buses.
Is Shuri Castle still under restoration? Can I visit in 2026?
Shuri Castle burned in October 2019. As of 2026, the exterior Seiden hall was completed in July 2025 — the red roof is visible. The interior of Seiden is not yet open; full reopening is expected late 2026. Visitors can still see the gates, courtyards, and surrounding areas. There is also an excellent exhibition centre documenting the restoration in progress. Always check the official site before you go.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
March–May and October–November are the best months. Mild weather, clear water, ideal for snorkelling and diving. June–September is hot with typhoon risk (Typhoon Season). December–February temperatures drop to 16–20°C — not great for swimming, but fewer people, lower prices, and a real chance to see humpback whales near Kerama.
What do I need to prepare for diving or snorkelling in Okinawa?
No experience needed at Blue Cave (Cape Maeda) — guided snorkel tours run for approx. ¥4,500–6,500/person including all equipment. For scuba diving you need a PADI/CMAS certification, or book a Discovery Dive tour (no cert required). Bring: reef-safe sunscreen · a rash guard · water shoes for the Cape Maeda entry steps.
Can I visit the Kerama Islands as a day trip?
Yes. High-speed ferries from Tomari Port (Naha) reach Zamami Island in 50 minutes and Tokashiki Island in 35 minutes. Multiple sailings per day; approx. ¥3,200 one-way. Take the early morning boat to maximise snorkelling time and return in the late afternoon. If you want to explore more than one island, an overnight stay of 1–2 nights is more comfortable. Book online in advance during peak season (May–September).
