Where do these hotels come from?
They're hotels our team has compiled and reviewed from multiple guest-review sources — nearly 800 across 26 Japanese cities. Each links to a full review with prices and booking links.
How is the score calculated?
Scores are aggregated from real guest reviews on the major booking platforms, then summarised into one number for easy comparison. Filter to 8.5+ or 9.0+ to see only the top-rated.
Are the prices shown real?
They're approximate starting prices per night for rough budgeting. The real price depends on dates and room type — check the latest in each review, which links to Agoda, Booking and Trip.com.
How far ahead should I book a hotel in Japan?
For peak periods (cherry blossoms late March–April, autumn leaves in November, and New Year) book 2–3 months ahead as rooms sell out and prices jump. Off-peak, 3–4 weeks ahead still gets good rates.
What's the difference between a ryokan and a hotel?
A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn — tatami floors, often an onsen and a kaiseki dinner included, priced per person rather than per room. Worth trying for a night to experience old-school Japan; filter to "Ryokan/Onsen" in the tool.
