City Snapshot

Two Very Different Cities on the Same Train Line

Understanding what each city is built around will save you from setting wrong expectations.

💻
Hsinchu — Engineering City
Home of TSMC, MediaTek and UMC. The Hsinchu Science Park produces a significant share of the world's most advanced chips. It is a compact, purposeful city that feeds you well but does not compete with Taipei on tourist attractions.
🎨
Taichung — Design City
Taiwan's third-largest city. The Calligraphy Greenway is lined with galleries and speciality cafés. Miyahara packs ice cream into a converted Japanese eye clinic. Fengjia Night Market is the largest in Taiwan. Toyo Ito designed the city's opera house.
🧵
Hakka Culture — Hsinchu only
Hsinchu sits at the heart of Taiwan's Hakka communities. The dialect, cooking (braised pork with preserved mustard greens, oil tofu, mochi) and handcraft traditions remain genuinely alive here, distinct from the Hoklo mainstream.
🍜
Rice Noodles (米粉) — Hsinchu only
Hsinchu's thin rice vermicelli (mifun) are dried by exceptionally strong coastal winds. You can buy them all over Taiwan, but eating them fresh in the city that makes them — with a bowl of clear broth at Dongmen Market — is a different experience.
🍦
Miyahara — Taichung only
A Japanese colonial-era eye clinic turned into a theatrical ice-cream parlour, with exposed brick arches, a soaring atrium and a pineapple-cake shop inside the restored colonnades. Queues on weekends; worth it.
🚲
Calligraphy Greenway — Taichung only
A 1.2-kilometre canalside promenade lined with independently owned cafés, design stores and small galleries. The National Taichung Theater (designed by Pritzker laureate Toyo Ito) is a short walk away. Half a day disappears effortlessly.

Decision Matrix

Which City Suits You?

💼

Business / Tech Traveller

Choose Hsinchu. If your meetings are at the Science Park or with a supplier in Zhubei, Hsinchu is the only answer. EPISODE JdV by Hyatt and the Sheraton are close to the Hsinchu HSR stop. See the Top 10 Hsinchu Hotels.

👪

Families with Children

Choose Taichung. Fengjia Night Market is genuinely fun for kids. The Calligraphy Greenway is a flat, easy stroll. Miyahara turns ice cream into theatre. Rainbow Village is colourful and quick. See the Top 10 Taichung Hotels.

💑

Couples / Romantic Trip

Choose Taichung. The Calligraphy Greenway café scene sets a romantic mood effortlessly. Dinner on Zhongshan Road, then a night stroll through Fengjia — it works. The Lin Hotel and Tempus offer excellent dinner views and spa access.

🎒

Backpackers / Budget

Choose Hsinchu. TRA tickets are a fraction of THSR fares. Hotels and guesthouses are cheaper. A full day of sightseeing — City God Temple, Dongmen Gate, NTHU lake — costs almost nothing in admission fees. Total budget for a day trip from Taipei: under NT$1,200.

📸

Content Creators / Photographers

Choose Taichung. Miyahara's brick arches and glass ceiling are architectural gold. The National Theater's curved concrete surfaces were designed to be photographed. Rainbow Village delivers street art in every direction. Calligraphy Greenway has a different café aesthetic around every corner.

🧮

Tech / Chip Enthusiasts

Choose Hsinchu. The Science Park Exhibition Hall (free entry, Mon–Fri) traces Taiwan's semiconductor story from 1980s to present. Walk or drive past the TSMC campuses. The atmosphere of a city built around engineering — nerd-meets-Hakka — is unlike anywhere else in Taiwan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hsinchu vs Taichung FAQ

How long does it take to travel from Taipei to Hsinchu vs Taichung?
Hsinchu is closer: a TRA Express train from Taipei Main Station takes about 80 minutes, costing NT$183–262. Taichung is served by the THSR high-speed rail (50–60 min, NT$700–1,000) but you still need a BRT or taxi (30 min) to reach the city centre. Door-to-door times are actually quite similar; the big difference is cost — TRA to Hsinchu is far cheaper.
What makes Hsinchu rice noodles (新竹米粉) special?
Hsinchu's famously thin rice vermicelli have been produced here for centuries, dried by the city's unusually strong north-easterly trade winds. The noodles are lighter and crispier than varieties made elsewhere. Best places: Dongmen Market, Zhucheng Market and Beimen Street. Order them dry-tossed (乾拌) or in clear broth. Packaged noodles are a popular souvenir.
Is half a day enough to see Taichung?
Not if you want to cover the highlights. Taichung's main sights — Calligraphy Greenway, Miyahara, Rainbow Village and Fengjia Night Market — are spread across the city and together need at least one overnight stay, ideally two. For a strict half-day visit, focus solely on the Calligraphy Greenway area and Miyahara, then catch the HSR home in the evening.
Can tourists visit the Hsinchu Science Park?
The working campus is closed to the public, but the Hsinchu Science Park Exhibition Hall (新竹科學工業園區展示館) is free to visit Monday–Friday, 9:00–17:00. It traces the history of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. Most general tourists find the Zhubei City area — full of cafés and restaurants popular with TSMC engineers — more rewarding for a casual afternoon.
What is Hakka culture and why is Hsinchu known for it?
The Hakka are a Han Chinese subgroup who settled heavily in Hsinchu and Miaoli. Their culture has distinct food (pork with preserved mustard greens, oil tofu, tang yuan mochi), dialect and traditions. Hsinchu gives you authentic Hakka cooking in unpretentious local restaurants — a genuinely different flavour from the Hoklo-influenced food mainstream Taiwan is known for internationally.
Can I visit both Hsinchu and Taichung in one trip?
Absolutely — and the logistics are elegant. Both cities sit on the same north-south rail corridor. A clean five-day itinerary: Taipei 2 nights → Hsinchu 1 night (80-min TRA) → Taichung 2 nights (80-min TRA south) → return to Taipei on the THSR in 50 minutes. No backtracking required.
