Beppu's hells · Yufuin onsen · Dazaifu shrine · Kumamoto castle · Nagasaki history · Mount Aso volcano · Itoshima coast · Saga ceramics · Dutch-themed Huis Ten Bosch — all easy to reach with the JR Kyushu Rail Pass.
Ever soaked your eyes in Beppu's multi-coloured hells, or wandered the shrine approach in Dazaifu munching hot umegae mochi? All of that is doable in a single day from Fukuoka — a small, compact city ringed by world-class destinations, every one of them within a three-hour radius. That's exactly why so many people choose Fukuoka as their base for exploring all of Kyushu rather than changing hotels every day. We've picked the 10 best day trips, complete with the real numbers on timing, prices, the JR Pass, and what you shouldn't miss at each one.
Don't want to manage the JR Pass and bus tickets yourself? Klook has day tours from Fukuoka to every destination — round-trip transport + a Thai/English-speaking guide + entry tickets, all in one package, for roughly ~¥8,000–18,000 per person.
Ranked by popularity — from the closest trips to the ones that need a little extra planning. Each one includes a recommended JR Pass route, an approximate budget, and trustworthy spot-specific tips.
♨️ 8 Coloured Hells1
The onsen town that produces more steam than anywhere on Earth — there are 8 "hells" (Jigoku) to walk between, each a distinctly different colour. The turquoise-blue pool (Umi Jigoku) · the deep-red blood pool (Chinoike Jigoku) · the bubbling mud pool (Bozu Jigoku) and five more. After touring the hells, there are plenty of public onsen left to soak in.

🏔️ Mountain Onsen2
If Beppu is the big-city onsen, Yufuin is the onsen village — quiet, romantic, with Lake Kinrinko, where morning mist drifts across the surface of the water. The Yufuin Floral Village street is lined with cute English-style shops, and the Comico Art Museum is gorgeous. If you only have one day to choose between Beppu and Yufuin — pick Yufuin.

⛩️ 1,100-Year-Old Shrine3
A shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning and knowledge. The 6,000-plus plum trees on the shrine grounds bloom pink and white in February–March. The long approach street is lined with shops selling umegae mochi (¥150 a piece — crisp outside, soft and fragrant inside). It's the shortest and easiest day trip from Fukuoka, and you don't need a JR Pass.

🏯 Castle by the Sea4
A seaside town famous for two things — Karatsu Castle, which stands proudly on a rocky cape in the middle of the Genkai Sea (some call it the "flying castle in the sea"), and Karatsu-yaki ceramics, used in Japanese tea ceremony for centuries. The Karatsu Yobuko morning market is renowned for the freshest squid in Japan. The Karatsu Kunchi Festival in November is a cultural heritage event you shouldn't miss.

🏯 The Largest Castle5
The best-value day trip in terms of "close, but what you see is enormous" — Kumamoto is just 30 minutes away by Shinkansen, yet you get to see Kumamoto Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Japan (currently being restored after the 2016 earthquake, but the Main Keep is open to visitors again) · Suizenji Jojuen Garden, which recreates the scenery of two mountains using ponds and hills · and of course, Kumamon, the world-famous mascot.

🕊️ History6
A day trip that moves you and broadens your understanding of the world — the Atomic Bomb Museum tells the story of 9 August 1945 honestly, without embellishment · Peace Park, with its memorial statue · Dejima, the small island where the Dutch lived during Japan's period of isolation · Glover Garden, Western-style hillside villas · and the summit of Mount Inasa, ranked among the world's top 3 night views. This is the longest trip in the group — we recommend an early start.

🌋 A Living Volcano7
A genuinely living volcano in the heart of Kyushu — its caldera is the largest in the world, measuring up to 128 km around. The weather and volcanic gases change every day. The current status is Alert Level 1 (open), but it can close by the hour depending on the gas — always check aso-volcano.jp before you set out. Even if the crater is closed, the Kusasenri grassland, where water buffalo always roam, stays open.

🌊 Stylish Coast8
The closest day trip on this list, yet its atmosphere is worlds apart from the city of Fukuoka — Itoshima is a bohemian-style coastline where Fukuoka's young people come to recharge · DIY seaside cafés with a surf-and-chill vibe · Meoto Iwa (the married rocks), a couple of rocks tied together with rope · vegetable farms and a farmers' market in the morning. In summer there are gorgeous sunflower fields and a sea of sunflowers.

🏺 World-Class Ceramics9
If you love ceramics and porcelain — this is the destination that will make you go "wow." Arita is the birthplace of Arita porcelain, exported to Europe via the Dutch VOC company from the 17th century onwards. There are still working ceramic kilns, some of which let you try throwing pots yourself. Imari has grander, heavier designs, and Saga City has a castle and temples that aren't yet crowded with tourists.

🌷 Holland in Japan10
Huis Ten Bosch is the largest Dutch-themed park in the world — located in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, with windmills, tulip fields, European canals, 100 restaurants, and an evening illumination that many people come for that alone. The JR Huis Ten Bosch Limited Express from Hakata runs straight to Huis Ten Bosch Station, right in front of the park gate, with no transfers needed.
