Day Trip Tips from Fukuoka

6 Things That Make Day Trips from FukuokaRun Smoothly and Worthwhile

🎫
3-Day JR Kyushu Rail Pass ¥22,000
If you plan to go to Beppu + Kumamoto + Nagasaki, or three or more trips, the pass is far better value than single tickets. Buy it online via the JR Kyushu website to save ¥1,000.
📅
Always Reserve Seats in Advance
The Yufuin no Mori and popular Limited Express trains sell out often, especially on weekends and during Golden Week. Book through the JR Kyushu app 1–2 weeks ahead.
🌋
Always Check Mount Aso's Status
The crater opens and closes daily depending on gas levels. Check aso-volcano.jp before you set out; if it's closed, switch your plan to the Kusasenri grassland instead.
🌅
Start Early for Far Trips
For Nagasaki, Beppu, and Mount Aso, leave Hakata no later than 8:00 am so you have a full day to explore before the return train.
🇩🇰
Dazaifu Doesn't Use the JR Pass
The Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu isn't covered by the JR pass. Buy a separate ticket ~¥410 each way — convenient, inexpensive, and no fuss with the pass.
💴
Keep Some Cash on Hand
Small ceramic shops in Arita, local buses around Aso, and many restaurants in the Yobuko market still take cash only. Keep ¥10,000–20,000 in yen ready per day.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ — Day Trips from FukuokaThat People Ask About Most

Which day trip from Fukuoka is best for first-timers?
Dazaifu is the best choice for first-timers — it's just a 30-minute ride on the Nishitetsu train, no JR Pass needed, with a fare of about ¥410 each way, and everything is walkable from the station, including Tenmangu Shrine, the umegae mochi street, and the beautifully designed Kengo Kuma Starbucks.
Is the JR Kyushu Rail Pass worth it for day trips from Fukuoka?
It depends on how many trips you plan. If you're going to Beppu + Yufuin + Kumamoto or Nagasaki on the same trip, the 3-day All Kyushu Pass (~¥22,000) is well worth it, because the combined train fares already top ¥15,000–20,000. But if you're only going to one or two places like Dazaifu or Itoshima, single tickets are cheaper. Buy the pass online via the JR Kyushu website to save ¥1,000.
Can you visit the Mount Aso crater in 2026?
As of early 2025 the Alert Level is at 1 (open), but the crater may close on a daily or hourly basis depending on volcanic gas levels. Always check aso-volcano.jp on the day you plan to go. Even if the crater is closed, the Kusasenri grassland, where water buffalo roam, is always open and beautiful in its own right.
Can you do Beppu + Yufuin as a day trip in one day?
It's possible in theory but not recommended, because the two are very different. Beppu is about walking the hells for 3–4 hours, while Yufuin is about strolling the town, shopping, and soaking in onsen. Cramming both into one day means a lot of rushing and losing the atmosphere. We recommend choosing one per day, or staying overnight in Yufuin and continuing to Beppu the next morning.
What is the best season for day trips from Fukuoka?
Spring (March–May) is beautiful thanks to the cherry and plum blossoms. Autumn (October–November) has cool, comfortable weather and Yufuin is at its most beautiful. Itoshima is good in summer, and Huis Ten Bosch is at its best during the Illumination (October–March). Summer (June–August) is hot and humid but everywhere is still worth visiting.
How much does a day trip from Fukuoka cost?
Nearby trips like Dazaifu or Itoshima cost around ¥2,000–4,000 per person per day, including transport + snacks and food. Farther trips like Beppu, Nagasaki, or Kumamoto run ¥6,000–12,000 per person, including transport + admission + food. Using a 3-day JR Kyushu Pass saves ¥5,000–10,000 in train fares per trip. Huis Ten Bosch costs more because of the theme-park admission.
