FAQ

FAQ · about travel money

Where do these rates come from?

Approximate reference rates, updated May 2026 · markets move daily, real rates depend on your bank · credit card · ATM in-country — typically 1-3% off mid-market. Use these to plan a trip, not to time a trade.

Exchange at home or at destination?

For most travellers, exchange at home at money-changers known for tight spreads · airport-arrival counters are the worst rate · ATM with home debit card works but adds $5-7 fee/transaction · for cards, always pick local currency (avoid DCC).

Are Wise/Revolut really better than credit cards?

Better on rate (near mid-market) and no 2.5% FX fee · but less buyer protection (chargebacks harder). Smart play: Wise/Revolut for ATM + small shops · credit card for hotels and big purchases (fraud protection matters).

How much cash should I carry?

For East Asia destinations: roughly NT$/¥/HK$ 5,000-10,000 ≈ US$150-330 per person for the first 2-3 days · Korea + Singapore go cardless almost everywhere · Taiwan + Hong Kong still need cash (night markets, small shops, some taxis).

What's DCC and why avoid it?

DCC = Dynamic Currency Conversion · terminals ask "pay in home currency or local?" Always pick local. Picking your home currency lets the merchant apply their own (worse) rate + 3-7% markup.
