Quick Take

Niagara Fallsis more than a viewpoint

Most people treat Niagara as a stand-and-photograph stop — and miss half the good stuff. Here you can cruise into the spray under the falls, walk a tunnel out behind the curtain of water, ride a tower for the panorama, and prowl the all-night Clifton Hill strip. The Canadian (Ontario) side has the clearly better view because you face both the Horseshoe and American Falls head-on. The falls are just 1.5 hours from Toronto — a day trip is plenty. We've picked 10 top attractions blending the falls, on-water rides, a tower, a wine town and a butterfly garden, each with location, directions and tips.

Horseshoe Falls Canadian side, Niagara 💧 Main Falls1
Horseshoe Falls
Horseshoe Falls & Table Rock

Niagara's main falls on the Canadian side — about 670 m wide in a horseshoe curve, with more than 2,800 cubic metres of water plunging every second. The best vantage is Table Rock, right at the brink, where the mist hits your face. At night the falls glow in seven colours every 15 minutes. From here the Canadian side frames both the Horseshoe and American Falls in one view. Free.

📍Where: Table Rock Welcome Centre, Niagara Pkwy
🚶Getting there: WeGo bus or walk along the Niagara Parkway from town
💡Tip: Sunny mornings often produce a rainbow over the falls. Night illumination is its own show.

Boat cruising close to Niagara Falls in red ponchos 🚤 Boat Cruise2
Boat into the Falls
Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower)

The unmissable experience — a boat in red ponchos sails right up to the face of the Horseshoe Falls until the spray drenches you and the roar is deafening. The Canadian side is Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower); the US side is Maid of the Mist (blue ponchos). It runs only in the ice-free season, roughly late March to November, and lasts about 20 minutes.

📍Where: 5920 Niagara Pkwy (Canadian boat dock)
🎟️Price: ~CAD 33 · book online to skip the queue
💡Tip: Waterproof your phone/camera. The upper deck gives a wider view.

Journey Behind the Falls
Journey Behind the Falls

Take an elevator 38 m down, then walk tunnels bored out to stand "behind" the Horseshoe Falls — watching the immense curtain of water rush past from the inside. A lower observation deck puts you right at the foot of the falls in the spray. Open year-round (winter shows the frozen falls), it's a hit with kids and adults alike. About 45 minutes.

📍Where: 6650 Niagara Pkwy (near Table Rock)
🎟️Price: ~CAD 24 · cheaper bundled in a Niagara Falls Pass
💡Tip: Summer brings heavy spray; winter is much quieter with no queue.

Skylon Tower observation deck over Niagara Falls 🗼 Observation Tower4
Skylon Tower
Skylon Tower Observation Deck

A 160 m tower delivering the panorama of both falls from above — the Horseshoe, the American Falls, and as far as Toronto/Buffalo on a clear day. Yellow "bug" elevators climb the outside of the tower. The top has a Revolving Dining Room that rotates once an hour so you can eat with the view, and it's the best spot for night illumination and fireworks.

📍Where: 5200 Robinson St, Niagara Falls, ON
🎟️Price: ~CAD 18 (deck) · free elevator with a dining reservation
💡Tip: Go at dusk for both the daytime view and the night illumination in one trip.

Clifton Hill & SkyWheel

The neon "Street of Fun by the Falls" — wax museums, haunted houses, arcades, mini-golf and chain restaurants. It buzzes after dark and is great for families or for evening activity once you've seen the falls.

📍Where: Clifton Hill, 10-min walk from Horseshoe Falls
🚶Getting there: Walk uphill from the falls or take the WeGo bus
💡Tip: A Clifton Hill Fun Pass pays off if you do several attractions. SkyWheel is best at night.

Niagara Tips

6 things that make your Niagara tripsmoother and cheaper

🇨🇦
Stay on the Canadian side
The falls view is fuller from Canada. Crossing to the US side requires a separate US visa (B1/B2).
🎟️
Buy the Niagara Falls Pass
It bundles the boat cruise + Journey Behind + White Water + WeGo bus — cheaper than buying separately.
🛂
Visa or eTA before flying
Canada has no visa-free entry for many passports. Apply for an eTA or TRV online via IRCC ahead.
🚌
WeGo bus covers everything
It runs along the Niagara Parkway linking the falls, Whirlpool and Butterfly Conservatory — a day pass is handy.
🧥
Bring a poncho + phone bag
Spray is heavy on both the boat and Journey Behind. A waterproof phone pouch helps a lot.
🎆
Summer fireworks + night lights
The falls are lit in 7 colours nightly all year; fireworks fire on summer weekends — check the schedule.
Frequently Asked

Niagara Falls FAQ

Is the Canadian or US side of Niagara Falls better?

The Canadian (Ontario) side has the clearly better view because you face both the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls head-on. The US side sits beside the falls with a side angle. If you can choose, stay on the Canadian side — but you need valid documents for both countries if you plan to cross.

How do I get from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

Take the GO Train from Union Station (about 2 hours), drive 1.5 hours (130 km), or join a day-trip tour from Toronto for roughly CAD 100-180 with transfers. A day trip is plenty; no overnight is required.

Does the Hornblower boat run all year?

No. Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower) only operates in the ice-free season, roughly late March to November. In winter it closes because parts of the falls freeze, and you enjoy the nightly 7-colour illumination instead.

Do visitors need a visa for the Canadian side of Niagara Falls?

Most travellers need either an eTA (visa-exempt countries) or a TRV before flying to Canada; apply online via IRCC. Thai passport holders need a TRV (4-8 weeks). If you plan to cross to the US side you also need a separate US visa (B1/B2).

How many days do you need at Niagara Falls?

One day covers the falls, a boat cruise and the Skylon Tower. But if you want night illumination/fireworks, wine tasting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Clifton Hill, an overnight (2 days) is more comfortable.

What is there besides the falls at Niagara?

Plenty — Clifton Hill's amusement strip, the Whirlpool Aero Car over the whirlpool, the Butterfly Conservatory, the White Water Walk along Class 6 rapids, and the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake with its vineyards and famous Icewine.
