Why visit Niagara Falls

2,800 tonnes of water
a second you can feel

Picture this — standing on the Hornblower in a red poncho, Horseshoe Falls right in front of you spraying mist all over your face, the roar so loud you can't hear each other. Ever felt yourself shrink against something this huge? Honestly, a Google image can't convey the roar or the tremor under your feet. Niagara is the highest-flowing waterfall in North America. Friend to friend — the Canada side (Niagara Falls, Ontario) has the better view, facing Horseshoe Falls head-on. Ride up Skylon Tower for the panorama; take the elevator down for Journey Behind the Falls; stroll the neon Clifton Hill; then drive the Niagara Parkway 20 minutes to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a world-class icewine town.

❓ FAQ

Planning Niagara Falls — what Thai travellers ask most

Do Thai citizens need a visa to visit Niagara Falls?
For the Canada side, you need a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) before travel — apply online via IRCC, 30-60 days, CAD 100 plus CAD 85 biometrics at VFS Bangkok. To cross to the US side you also need a separate US visa (ESTA isn't available to Thai citizens). See the full guide on our Canada visa for Thais page.
How do I get to Niagara Falls from Toronto, and what does it cost?
It's about 90 minutes (130 km) from Toronto. Renting a car is easiest via the QEW. GO Transit train+bus from Union Station takes ~2 hours for ~CAD 25-30, or take a day tour from Toronto that includes transport and Hornblower (great if you don't want to drive). In town, the WEGO bus loops the attractions.
Is the Canada or US side better for viewing the falls?
The Canada side is clearly better — it faces Horseshoe Falls (the biggest cataract) head-on, with Hornblower, Skylon Tower and Clifton Hill all on one side. The US side gives you the feeling of standing on the edge (Cave of the Winds, Goat Island) but the panorama can't match Canada's. Most Thai travellers stay on the Canada side.
What's the difference between Hornblower and Maid of the Mist?
They're different boats from different sides — Hornblower departs from the Canada side (red ponchos), Maid of the Mist from the US side (blue ponchos). Both get close to Horseshoe Falls and both soak you. Pick whichever side you're staying on. Both operate May-Nov (winter ice closes them).
What's the best month to visit Niagara Falls?
Jun-Sep is best — warm 25°C, Hornblower running, everything open (but busy). May/Oct are quieter and cheaper with decent weather. Winter (Dec-Feb) closes the boats but the frozen falls are uniquely beautiful, plus the Winter Festival of Lights illuminates the city (Nov-Jan).
How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake, and is it worth it?
The wine town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 20 minutes' drive from the falls along the scenic Niagara Parkway. It's a lovely heritage town with world-class icewine wineries (Inniskillin, Peller, Jackson-Triggs) and the Shaw Festival theatre. Well worth it if you have a half day, especially for wine lovers/couples. Wine tours with transport are available if you don't want to drive.

About — Visiting Niagara Falls in 2026

Niagara Falls is a set of three waterfalls on the Canada-US border. The main cataract, Horseshoe Falls — 57 metres high and 670 metres wide — sits on the Canada side (Ontario). It's the highest-flowing waterfall in North America (~2,800 m³/sec). The Canadian city of Niagara Falls has ~88,000 residents but welcomes over 13 million visitors a year. Just 90 minutes from Toronto, it's Ontario's most popular day trip — and the Canada side offers the better view, facing Horseshoe Falls head-on.

Honest heads-up before you book — friend to friend · A Niagara trip for Thai travellers (with Toronto) runs about 30,000-60,000 THB (3-4 days, excluding flights). Flying from Bangkok to Toronto (YYZ) via Tokyo / Hong Kong / Doha takes 17-21 hours with connections. Common pitfalls Thai travellers hit — you must get a TRV 30-60 days ahead, and if you want to cross the bridge to the US side you need a separate US visa (ESTA won't work) — don't assume it's an easy hop. Falls-view (Fallsview) rooms cost 50-100% more, so budget for it. Easy to forget — the Hornblower really soaks you, so bring a change of clothes and a waterproof phone case. Parking near the falls runs CAD 25-40/day. Regretted not stopping at Niagara-on-the-Lake? The wine town is only 20 minutes away and well worth it. Tipping 15-18% is standard.
