❓ FAQ

Planning Cancún — what Thai travellers ask most

Do Thai citizens need a visa to visit Cancún (Mexico)?
Thai citizens need a Mexican visa, unless you hold a valid US, Schengen, Canadian, UK or Japanese visa — in which case you can enter Mexico without a separate visa (a special Mexican rule). Otherwise apply for a Mexican visa at the embassy. See the full details on our Mexico visa for Thais page.
How do I get from Cancún airport (CUN) to the Hotel Zone?
CUN is about 20-30 minutes from the Hotel Zone. Booking a private transfer ahead is best value and safest (~USD 50-70 per group via Klook/your hotel). ADO buses go to downtown (cheap but you'll connect). Avoid the airport taxis — they're overpriced and you'll have to haggle. Many all-inclusives include a transfer in the package.
What's the best month to visit Cancún?
Dec-Apr is best — dry, sunny, clear seas (but high season and priciest, especially Christmas/New Year/Spring Break in March). May-Jun gets hotter but cheaper. Jul-Nov is rainy with hurricane risk (Sep-Oct is highest risk). Watch out for sargassum seaweed washing ashore May-Aug — check a sargassum map before booking.
Is an all-inclusive resort worth it?
Very much so for Cancún — meals, drinks (including alcohol) and activities are all in one price, so you never think about extra spending at every meal. Great for couples/families who'll mostly relax at the resort. But if you want to eat street food and explore a lot outside the resort, a regular downtown hotel in El Centro may suit you better and cheaper. Adults-only resorts are great for honeymoons.
Can I visit Chichen Itza on my own, and how far is it?
Chichen Itza (one of the New 7 Wonders of the World) is about 2.5 hours from Cancún. Most go on a day tour with transport + a Mayan guide + a cenote swim + a buffet (easiest, ~USD 60-90). You can drive yourself but leave at dawn (6-7am) to beat the heat and tour groups. There's an entry fee + parking. You can stop in the town of Valladolid on the way.
Is Cancún safe for tourists?
The Hotel Zone and tourist areas are safe, with tourist police and lots of visitors. Use normal precautions like any tourist city — book transfers ahead, don't carry valuables, stay in tourist zones late at night. Don't drink the tap water — use bottled water (resorts usually provide filtered water). Watch for rip currents on some beaches — check the warning flags.

About — Visiting Cancún in 2026

Cancún is Mexico's top beach resort city, in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatán Peninsula along the Caribbean Sea. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a 25 km 7-shaped strip lined with hundreds of all-inclusive resorts. The sea is turquoise and 28°C all year. It's the gateway to the Riviera Maya and the heritage of the Maya civilisation — a 20-minute ferry reaches Isla Mujeres, a 2.5-hour day trip reaches Chichen Itza (one of the New 7 Wonders). It's served by direct flights into Cancún airport (CUN), Mexico's second busiest.

Honest heads-up before you book — friend to friend · A Cancún trip for Thai travellers runs about 50,000-100,000 THB (5-7 days, excluding flights, depending on whether you go all-inclusive). Flying from Bangkok to CUN via Tokyo/LA or Doha/Mexico City takes 22-28 hours with connections (the longest on this list). Common pitfalls Thai travellers hit — the visa: check first, you enter free with a valid US/Schengen visa but otherwise need a Mexican visa. Watch out for sargassum seaweed May-Aug, which can spoil the beach — check before booking. Easy to forget — don't drink the tap water, use bottled. Book your airport transfer ahead — safer than airport taxis. Tipping 10-15% (still tip the staff at all-inclusives). Use reef-safe sunscreen in cenotes/when snorkelling. Regretted not visiting Tulum from Cancún? The boho beach town is just 90 minutes away.
