Sulfuric springs by MRT vs silky soda springs by bus — two very different onsen experiences, both under 90 minutes from Taipei. Here's how to choose.
Taipei's own onsen district — fully reachable by MRT in about an hour from Taipei Main Station. Home to public baths, the famous Hot Spring Museum, mountain hiking trails, and a range of hotels from NT$1,900 to NT$11,000. Springs are sulfuric: white or greenish, with a mild distinctive smell.
Yilan's premier onsen town, about 70 minutes from Taipei by NMTC express bus. Famous for sodium bicarbonate springs — clear, odorless, silky on skin. Larger resort hotels with multiple outdoor pools, family amenities, and romantic private-bath rooms. Often called Taiwan's "beauty water" onsen.
The effect on your skin is genuinely different — not just marketing.

Not familiar with routes and don't want to deal with buses? Beitou is the clear choice. MRT all the way, walk 10 minutes from Xinbeitou station, done. Easiest onsen day trip in Taiwan.
→ BeitouBeitou's acidic sulfuric water can irritate young skin. Jiaoxi is safer and more family-oriented — sodium bicarbonate water is gentle, and resorts like Evergreen have dedicated children's pools.
→ JiaoxiYamagata Kaku in Jiaoxi scores 9.7/10 — the highest in the Wherebest Taiwan database — with private in-room soaking tubs from NT$4,850. Jiaoxi wins on romance and value; matching quality in Beitou costs considerably more.
→ JiaoxiBeitou's Millennium Hot Spring public pool at NT$40 per soak is the cheapest onsen experience in Taiwan. Beitou wins on price. Add NT$55 for the MRT and you've had a hot spring day for under NT$100.
→ BeitouTo be honest: some people find the Beitou smell genuinely unpleasant, especially in the concentrated lower-floor pools. Jiaoxi is the better option — odorless, pH-neutral water that almost anyone can tolerate.
→ JiaoxiBags at the Taipei hotel, flight at 8pm — still want to fit in an onsen? Beitou only. Leave bags, take the MRT mid-morning, soak a few hours, back to hotel by 3pm, airport bus at 5pm. Jiaoxi doesn't fit in this window.
