Discovery Hotel Penghu — the island's only full-service 4-star resort, with a rooftop pool and the island-hop ferry pier right at the door

Penghu has hundreds of guesthouses, but if you want a full-service hotel with a swimming pool, fitness centre and the kind of facilities you'd expect from a 4-star property — Discovery Hotel Penghu (澎澄飯店) is the only answer in the archipelago. The hotel sits on Magong Bay directly beside the Nanhai Wharf, which is the main departure point for island-hopping ferries to Qimei, Jibei and a dozen other islands. Open the lobby door and the pier is a five-minute walk away.

Our Full Review

Penghu isn't like mainland Taiwan. It's an archipelago of 90 islands in the Taiwan Strait, swept by strong winds year-round, with a turquoise sea and a fishing culture that has no equivalent elsewhere in the country. Discovery Hotel Penghu (澎澄飯店) opened in 2018 as the first — and still the only — resort-style hotel in the islands with a swimming pool, fitness centre, spa and more than 200 rooms. Its position beside Nanhai Wharf, the main ferry terminal for islands like Qimei and Jibei, is a practical advantage no other property in Magong can match.

"The view from the 7th-floor pool is stunning, guests say — you can see the sea and the ferry terminal clearly. Every morning they just walked out of the hotel and got on the boat. Coming back to Penghu, many add, they'd absolutely stay here again."

7th-floor Infinity Pool at Discovery Hotel Penghu with harbour and sea views

The 7th-floor rooftop pool is what guests mention most. The Infinity Pool measures 15 × 5 metres with a depth of 1.1 m and faces Magong Bay, with clear views of the harbour and the sea beyond. Adjoining it is a children's paddling pool less than 30 cm deep — suitable for toddlers. On the same floor, the Go Star Challenge covers 575 pings of extreme-sports space: rock-climbing walls, ninja obstacle courses and other adventure activities. The hotel claims it is the largest outdoor activities facility of its kind in Taiwan — a bold claim, but one that guests with older children consistently praise in their reviews.

Penghu Loft Room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ferry pier

The hotel's location delivers an advantage that no amount of renovation can create elsewhere in Magong. Nanhai Wharf is 300 m from the lobby — roughly a five-minute walk. The hotel runs a free airport transfer service. Penghu Airport is 8 km away, about 15 minutes by car. The Pier 2 shopping complex is adjacent, local seafood restaurants surround the hotel, and Zhongyangshi Night Market is within easy walking distance — everything connected without needing a vehicle.

The hotel offers six room categories, from the Penghu Loft Room — a ship-inspired design with floor-to-ceiling windows framing harbour or garden views — to the Discovery Mansion, the suite the hotel describes as its best ocean-viewing position. Rooms are spacious by Taiwanese standards, and across platforms the most consistently praised rooms are the upper-floor harbour-view Loft units, whose guests report waking up to "the sight of ferries departing in the morning mist". Room sizes run from 43 sqm (Loft Park King) to 80 sqm (Villa House).

Lobby and reception area at Discovery Hotel Penghu, island-inspired design

Breakfast at the all-day restaurant 澄澄全日餐廳 runs from 06:30 to 10:00 and features a Chinese-Western spread. Guests rate it fairly — typically around 8.5 out of 10 — with praise for variety and a note that it's decent but not exceptional. One reviewer, describing themselves as a culinary professional, called it "the hotel's one weak point." For genuinely excellent food, the surrounding seafood restaurants deliver far better value and freshness. The restaurant also operates 24 hours as an all-day diner, which is genuinely convenient for guests returning late from evening boat tours.

Discovery Hotel Penghu (澎澄飯店)

Several recurring perks stand out in guest reviews: complimentary drinks outside guest rooms (soft drinks, tea, coffee) are mentioned across multiple platforms — a touch that guests find unexpectedly generous. The gym overlooks the harbour. The spa offers massage, sauna and steam room. Bicycles are available for rent, and a Play House operates on the 7th floor for younger children. The 24-hour front desk is particularly praised for its efficiency in arranging island-hopping tours and airport coordination — both important logistics for a destination where schedules can shift with weather and tide.

For travellers flying from Bangkok or elsewhere in Southeast Asia: Penghu (Magong Airport, MZG) has direct flights from Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) and Kaohsiung (KHH), both taking around 45–50 minutes with Uni Air or Mandarin Airlines. Tickets typically run NT$2,000–3,500 one way. Peak season is May through October — the months when Penghu's sea conditions are ideal for snorkelling and island hopping. During this window, Discovery Hotel rooms fill quickly and prices run 2–3 times higher than the winter low season. Book at least two months ahead for a summer visit, especially around the Dragon Boat Festival and Golden Week.

Infinity Pool overlooking the sea — Penghu's only hotel-grade rooftop pool
A 15 × 5 m Infinity Pool on the 7th floor faces Magong Bay, alongside a children's paddling pool, fitness room with harbour views, and a spa with sauna. None of this exists at any other property on the islands.
Nanhai ferry pier 5 minutes away — island-hop every morning without any transfer
Walk 300 m from the hotel lobby and you're at Nanhai Wharf — the main departure point for ferries to Qimei Island, Jibei Island and a dozen smaller destinations. No taxi needed, no waiting.
🧗
Go Star Challenge — claimed to be Taiwan's largest outdoor extreme-sports venue
A 575-ping adventure zone on the 7th floor with rock-climbing walls, ninja obstacle courses and outdoor challenge activities. Well suited to families with older children who want more than a beach day.

  • Rooftop Infinity Pool with harbour views — the only hotel pool in all of Penghu
  • Spacious, clean rooms; harbour-view Loft rooms on upper floors are excellent

Honest Take
🎯
This place is a great fit if...
Discovery Hotel is comfortably the best choice for travellers who want a proper full-service hotel with a pool and the island-hop ferry pier at the door in Penghu — nothing else comes close at this level.
💡 Check before you book
These 3 points matter to some travellers — make sure they fit your trip (we have added the workaround).
  • 💡Magong is a small town — quiet after dark. There is no nightlife district or large shopping mall as you'd find in Taipei or Kaohsiung. → If you enjoy peaceful evenings, sea breezes and stargazing, this is a feature not a flaw. If you need a lively after-dinner scene, Penghu may not be the right destination.
  • 💡4-star is not 5-star luxury. Discovery Hotel is clean, well-run and well-equipped, but don't expect butler service, a fine-dining signature restaurant or the level of finish you'd find at a Mandarin Oriental. → For the freshest, most memorable seafood on the island, the local restaurants surrounding the hotel are your best option, not the in-house dining.
  • 💡Peak-season prices (May–Oct) are roughly 2–3× higher than the off-season. A standard room that costs NT$2,800–3,500 in winter can reach NT$7,000–8,500 during summer and holiday weekends. → Plan well ahead for summer visits, and check the hotel's cancellation policy carefully before booking during Golden Week or Dragon Boat Festival.

Insider Tips
Book your island-hopping ferry before you check in — popular boats sell out fast
Ferries to Qimei Island (七美) and Jibei Island (吉貝) depart from Nanhai Wharf from around 07:30. During summer, seats fill within an hour of opening. Ask the front desk at check-in to help you book or recommend a reliable operator.
🏊
Swim at 17:00–18:30 for golden-hour light over the harbour
The Infinity Pool faces south-west, so late afternoon brings warm golden light across the sea. It's also quieter than midday. Photographers and couples consistently pick this window for the best shots.
🦞
Eat seafood at the local restaurants around Nanhai — fresher and cheaper than the hotel
Seafood restaurants near the wharf charge NT$300–600 per person for lobster, scallops and sashimi caught the same morning. The hotel's front desk can point you to staff favourites — don't be shy about asking.
📅
Off-season (Nov–Mar) is half the price — but expect wind and occasional ferry cancellations
Winter room rates start from NT$2,800–3,500, a significant saving on peak prices. However, Penghu sits in the path of the winter north-east monsoon and conditions can be rough. Some island ferries are cancelled on windy days. Ideal for travellers who want quiet, dramatic seascapes and fewer crowds.
