About This Trip

A Flowing Route with No Backtracking — Hitting Every Highlight

Sun Moon Lake rewards an overnight stay more than almost anywhere in Taiwan — 2 days and 1 night is the sweet spot. On day one you check in and immediately board a boat to explore the lake, stopping at Xuanguang Temple for legendary tea eggs before continuing to Ita Thao village for indigenous mountain food and the evening market. Day two starts at 05:30 with a sunrise from your lakeside balcony, followed by a morning bicycle ride around one of CNN's top ten cycling routes in the world, then a stop at the Hohocha Ruby tea farm on the way back.

Tips for This Trip

5 Things Worth Knowing Before You Go

🌅
Book a lake-view room early
The sunrise is the headline act here. A balcony overlooking the lake is the key ingredient. Book late and you'll end up with a garden-view room instead.
🚤
NT$300 boat pass is valid all day
One ticket lets you hop on and off at every pier as many times as you like. Xuanguang Temple and Ita Thao are both included. Ferries run every 30 minutes.
🚲
Cycle early morning for the best experience
The air is cool before 09:00, crowds are minimal, and the lake perfectly mirrors the mountains. Multiple rental shops operate out of Shuishe.
🍃
Stop at Hohocha on the way back
A real working tea farm just 15 minutes from the lake, right on the route home. Roasting class, gifts, and Ruby ice cream all in one stop.
Weekdays are far better than weekends
Monday to Friday sees roughly 50% fewer visitors. Hotel prices are lower too. The boats still run on their normal schedule. If you can avoid weekends, the trip improves dramatically.
Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ · Common Questions Answered

Can I do Sun Moon Lake as a day trip from Taipei?
You can, but it is tiring. The round trip from Taipei takes 5–6 hours of travel, leaving only about 4 hours on the lake — enough for Shuishe and Ita Thao but nothing more. You will miss the sunrise, which is the real highlight. Staying one night is strongly recommended and makes a huge difference.
How do I get there from Taipei?
The best route: HSR Taipei → Taichung (1 hour, NT$700) then Bus 6670 Taichung → Shuishe (2 hours, NT$190). Total journey 3–4 hours. This is cheaper and more flexible than taking a direct coach from Taipei.
How much does a 2-day 1-night trip actually cost?
Budget roughly NT$7,000–9,000 per person. Lakeside accommodation runs NT$2,500–5,000 per night; three meals cost NT$800–1,500; boat plus activities come to around NT$500; transport is about NT$1,800; and souvenirs NT$500–1,500.
What is the best season to visit?
October to April offers cool, comfortable weather. May to September is hot and humid with frequent rain, though the greenery is lush. Avoid Lunar New Year and Golden Week (29 Apr–5 May) when crowds are heavy and hotel prices jump two to three times.
What are the must-eat foods here?
See the full food guide · Top five: President Fish · tea eggs at Xuanguang Temple · Ruby Red Tea · wild boar sausage at Ita Thao · hand-pounded Thao mochi.
Which side of the lake should I stay on?
The Shuishe side is most convenient — restaurants, the main ferry pier, and most hotels are here. Ita Thao is quieter and slightly cheaper. See 10 recommended Sun Moon Lake hotels.
