Hostal Cafe Monterrey — A backpacker home in the heart of Barrio Antiguo

If you're a backpacker after new friends, an old-town location and the lowest price — Hostal Cafe is your home in Barrio Antiguo. An arty hostel with an in-house cafe, dorms and private rooms, a walk to Macroplaza, in the heart of the city's bar and nightlife quarter.

Our Full Review

Hostal Cafe sits on Calle Morelos in the heart of Barrio Antiguo — Monterrey's old quarter full of bars, pubs, galleries and arty cafes. A 2-minute walk to the nightlife and a 7-8 minute walk to Macroplaza, MARCO and the cathedral. A dream location for backpackers who want old-town sightseeing and a social scene.

Guests say the Barrio Antiguo location and the feel here are exactly what they came for — it set the tone for their whole trip.

Macroplaza

It's a converted old house with an arty feel — the in-house cafe is the standout, a place to work, chat or have morning coffee. The vibe is very friendly and solo travelers make friends easily. The young staff know the area and recommend local bars and restaurants.

There are dorms and private rooms — clean dorms with lockers, plus private rooms for couples or anyone wanting privacy while keeping the hostel vibe. Guests praise the location and friendly atmosphere, from around MXN 400 (฿800)/night, the cheapest in our list.

There's a cafe and common areas to socialize, free Wi-Fi, and at times activities and tours like a city walking tour or Chipinque and Grutas de García trips so guests meet and explore more. Great for independent travelers who want local tips.

Paseo Santa Lucia riverwalk

Things to know — it's in the heart of the Barrio Antiguo bar district, so weekend nights bring pub and nightlife noise. If you want quiet, choose an inner-facing private room or a different property. On safety — busy and lit in the evening, but late at night walk in groups and use Uber.

On value — dorms from around MXN 400 (฿800)/night, the cheapest in our list, and great value with the central old-town location, in-house cafe and the chance to meet fellow travelers. For backpackers or budget solo travelers who want to sightsee and socialize, this is the best pick.

Barrio Antiguo Monterrey

One practical note for Thai travelers: Mexico is not visa-free for Thai passport holders, but if you hold a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan or Schengen visa you can enter without a separate Mexican visa — confirm the current rules with the embassy before you fly. Monterrey is a business city and very Spanish-dominant; English is spoken at this hotel and in San Pedro, but a translation app helps at markets and with Uber. Safety here is really about neighborhood choice: San Pedro Garza García is consistently rated the safest municipality in Mexico, while Centro and Barrio Antiguo are fine by day and lively at night but warrant normal big-city caution and Uber after dark. Between meetings or sightseeing, the city rewards you with the iconic Cerro de la Silla skyline, Macroplaza, Fundidora park and easy mountain escapes to Chipinque and Grutas de García.

In short, Hostal Cafe Monterrey sells atmosphere and an old-town location. If you want to save money, meet new friends and stay in the heart of Barrio Antiguo within walking distance of landmarks and nightlife — go for it. Best for backpackers; if you want maximum quiet, privacy and safety, see other picks.
