HI Seattle at the American Hotel — Pioneer Square

HI Seattle is a Hostelling International hostel in historic Pioneer Square, near King Street Station (Amtrak/Light Rail from the airport), with cheap, clean, safe dorm beds. Honestly, ideal for budget travellers arriving by train.

Our Full Review

HI Seattle at the American Hotel is in Pioneer Square, the city's oldest historic district, very close to King Street Station — honestly, if you arrive by Amtrak or take Link Light Rail from SEA airport (~40 min) and get off here, you can wheel your bag straight to the hostel. Super convenient.

Pioneer Square, Seattle

The building is a historic hotel converted into an HI hostel. Accommodation is dorms of various sizes (including female-only) plus some private rooms. Beds are clean with lockers, and the shared bathrooms are clean. Many guests say it's cleaner and safer than expected at this price.

The highlight is being part of Hostelling International, with standards for cleanliness and safety. There's a shared kitchen, common spaces and a light breakfast. Pioneer Square itself has galleries, cafes, bars and old brick architecture to wander, and you can walk to Downtown and Pike Place.

Downtown Seattle

Service is friendly in the HI style, and staff can advise on routes and sights. It suits budget travellers, backpackers, solo travellers, or anyone arriving by train who wants safe accommodation near the station.

On value — dorm beds start around $55/night, great value in the city near the train station. Honestly, it's a sensible budget pick for those who prioritise price and travel convenience.

Pike Place Market

One thing to know: Pioneer Square is quieter than Downtown at night, and some streets can feel deserted — use normal caution walking back late. As a hostel, dorms have several people, so light sleepers should bring earplugs. Seattle is also rainy in winter.

Bottom line: HI Seattle is a safe, good-value hostel near the train station in Pioneer Square. If you arrive by train or prioritise budget and safety, go for it.
