Alishan — Forest Railway, Zhushan Sunrise & Cherry Blossoms

The narrow-gauge forest train winds through cypress and cedar at 2,200 metres. Wake before dawn to watch the sun emerge above a sea of clouds — one of Taiwan's most rewarding experiences.

Why Alishan Stands Apart
Not every mountain has a century-old forest railway and a sunrise that makes grown adults tear up.
🚂
The Forest Railway is the journey

Built during the Japanese colonial era, this narrow-gauge line climbs through five vegetation zones. The train itself — not just the destination — is the experience.

🌅
Zhushan Sunrise above the clouds

At 2,451 m, Zhushan is often above the cloud layer. When the sun breaks through, it lights up an orange sea below you. Completely unlike any lowland sunrise.

🌸
Cherry blossoms at altitude

Alishan's cherry season runs 2–3 weeks later than Taipei's. If you miss Yangmingshan in February, Alishan gives you a second chance in March.

🍵
High-mountain oolong tea

The cool mist here produces some of Taiwan's most prized oolongs. Alishan tea sold on the mountain is almost always genuine — unlike the tourist shops in the city.

Four Things You Should Not Miss
These are the non-negotiables — plan your overnight stay around them.
MUST DO

🌅 Zhushan Sunrise — Take the Dawn Train

The Zhushan Line departs around 04:30–05:00 depending on the season. Buy your ticket the afternoon before at the station. Crowds are real — arrive at least 30 minutes early and bring a warm jacket (temperatures drop to 8–12°C even in summer).

HISTORIC

🚂 The Forest Railway — Ride It for the View

The main line from Chiayi climbs 2,000 m over 71 km, passing through tropical, subtropical, temperate, and alpine zones. Even a short segment — such as the Shenmu Line to the giant cypress — is worth it for the scenery alone.

SEASONAL

🌸 Cherry Blossoms — Plan for March

Late February to early April, the slopes around Alishan Village explode with pink. The Taiwan Forest Bureau posts bloom updates online. Weekends get extremely crowded — if possible, visit mid-week and book your hotel two months in advance.

NATURE

🌲 Tea Estates & Giant Cypress Trail

The Sacred Tree trail winds through a forest of 2,000–3,000-year-old Taiwanese red cypress. The Shenmu Line train delivers you directly to the trailhead. Pair the walk with a tea stop at one of the small farms along the Shizhuo road above the main resort area.

Getting to Alishan
Three routes — each with real trade-offs.

🚆 By HSR + Bus (Recommended)

  • HSR Taipei → Chiayi: ~1.5 hours, from NT$1,490
  • Bus 7322 from Chiayi HSR Station → Alishan: ~2.5–3 hours, NT$253
  • Buses run 6–7 times per day; check the Chiayi Bus website for latest schedules
  • Total door-to-door from Taipei: ~5 hours

🚂 By Alishan Forest Railway

  • Departs from Chiayi City Station (not the HSR station — 10-min taxi between the two)
  • Journey: ~2.5 hours through jungle, switchbacks, and spiral loops
  • Fare: NT$214 one way — scenic but slower than the bus
  • Advance booking strongly recommended, especially on weekends and during cherry blossom season
  • Train + Bus combo: ride up by train, return by bus (or vice versa)

🚗 By Car or Rental

  • Chiayi City → Alishan via Provincial Highway 18: ~1.5–2 hours (50 km of mountain road)
  • Driving allows stops at tea farms along the way
  • Parking at Alishan is limited on peak weekends

🌙 Overnight vs Day Trip

  • Overnight: Essential if you want the Zhushan sunrise. Hotels fill fast — book 1–2 months ahead for cherry blossom season and Lunar New Year
  • Day trip: Possible but you'll miss the sunrise and only see the resort area. Sun Moon Lake makes a stronger day trip if time is limited
  • Two nights is the sweet spot for most visitors
Forest Railway booking tip: Tickets sell out weeks in advance during cherry blossom season and national holidays. Book through the official Alishan Forest Railway website as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Lunar New Year warning: Accommodation in and around Alishan is fully booked during Lunar New Year (usually late January to early February) and prices spike 2–3×. Unless you plan many months ahead, choose a different travel window.
Suggested Two-Day Itinerary
Built around the Zhushan sunrise — the moment the whole trip is designed for.
1
Day 1 — Morning Travel from Chiayi to Alishan

Catch an early Bus 7322 or the morning forest railway from Chiayi. The bus is faster; the train is more scenic. Either way, arrive by midday to have the afternoon free.

2
Day 1 — Afternoon Giant Cypress Trail + Tea Stop

Take the Shenmu Line train (short, scenic, very much worth it) to the Shenmu Trailhead and walk among the ancient red cypress trees. Afterwards, stop at a mountain tea shop near Shizhuo — the oolong here is genuinely excellent.

3
Day 1 — Evening Check In + Buy Your Sunrise Train Ticket

After settling into your hotel, head to the Zhushan Station ticket window to purchase your sunrise train ticket for tomorrow. Go before 18:00 to ensure availability. Then rest early — the alarm is coming.

4
Day 2 — 04:30 Zhushan Sunrise Train Departs

Dress in layers — it will be cold. The 15-minute train ride deposits you at the platform, from which a short walk leads to the main viewing area. Find your spot early. When the sun breaks above the clouds, the entire platform goes quiet.

5
Day 2 — Morning Walk Back to the Village + Forest Trails

Many visitors walk the 2.5 km trail back to Alishan Village after sunrise — a beautiful way to see the forest in the early morning light. Grab breakfast at the village, then explore the Alishan Station area before heading back to Chiayi.

Six Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
Practical details that make the difference between a frustrating trip and a great one.
🧥

It gets cold — even in summer. Alishan sits at 2,200 m. Even in July, temperatures drop to 12–15°C at night and early morning. A light fleece and windproof layer are essential.

📅

Cherry blossom timing is not exact. Peak bloom varies by 2–3 weeks year to year. Check the Taiwan Forest Bureau's forecast (forestry.gov.tw) as your trip approaches, and book with flexible cancellation just in case.

🎟️

Buy the sunrise train ticket the day before. Don't assume you can buy it at 04:00 in the morning. The Zhushan Line sells out, especially on weekends and during peak seasons.

☁️

Clouds are unpredictable. On some mornings Zhushan is socked in and you see nothing. If this happens, it's not a ruined trip — the forest walk down is still beautiful. Check the forecast but accept that weather wins.

💳

Cash is useful. Many small tea farms and roadside stalls are cash-only. Withdraw NT$1,000–2,000 before leaving Chiayi.

🍵

Buy tea directly from the farms. Alishan oolong sold at the mountain is priced fairly and usually genuine. The shops near Chiayi train station are hit-or-miss. If a farm invites you in for a free tasting, that's the one to buy from.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before you plan your trip.
How do I get to Alishan from Taipei?
Take HSR to Chiayi (about 1.5 hours, from NT$1,490). From Chiayi Station, transfer to Bus 7322 to Alishan (about 2.5–3 hours, NT$253). Alternatively, ride the Alishan Forest Railway from Chiayi City Station — a more scenic 2.5-hour journey for NT$214. Total travel time from Taipei is approximately 5 hours.
Do I really need to stay overnight at Alishan?
For the Zhushan sunrise — which is the main attraction — yes. The sunrise train departs around 04:30–05:00, and there's no practical way to reach the mountain that early on the same day. Most visitors who do a day trip report feeling they missed the point entirely.
When is cherry blossom season at Alishan?
Cherry blossoms typically bloom from late February to early April, peaking in early-to-mid March. The Taiwan Forest Bureau publishes annual bloom forecasts. Note that this is 2–3 weeks later than Taipei's Yangmingshan, making Alishan a great second-chance option if you miss the city blooms.
Which forest railway lines are open?
The Zhushan Line (sunrise train) and Shenmu Line (giant cypress area) are the two most important lines and generally operate year-round. The Alishan Forest Railway website publishes real-time service status. Some sections are occasionally closed for maintenance — check before your visit.
Is a day trip to Alishan worth it?
It's possible, but most visitors who try it feel they saw the car park more than the mountain. You'll miss the sunrise and have limited time on the trails. If a day trip is your only option, Sun Moon Lake is generally a more satisfying choice — the scenery is accessible without any early-morning logistics.
